Topic: New to Mustang V8

Hey guys and gals how goes it this morning? Names James and I recently had a running <no smoking knocking or pinging> 1972 Mustang coupe fall into my lap for a $1000 and couldnt pass it up.  New to the restoration experience.  I had always dreamed of a mustang and though this isnt my "dream" year I thought it was a deal I couldnt pass up. other than some rust, which is normal for a car that old, and a little bit of paint, the car looks like its in relatively good shape. the rust spots shouldnt be that hard to fix, just find some replacement panels.

Buy the whole trunk pan,  and gas tank, then just use some rust inhibitor like "POR 15" on the rest of the trunk.  If you can't put a paint job on it, take it to a pro when you get the money.  The interior can be repaired by you.  Just get the seat foam, seat covers, dash pad if it needs replacing,  etc.  and put them on.  Welcome to the site.

like i said you dont need to do a lot work to it. For the parts you need meaning trunk lid and gas tank, you could try either year one or orginal parts group

Yeah initially Im looking at putting a completely new trun in there, theres another rust spot behind the drivers seat, exaust,  trunk key/latch and going to take the vynal top off getting some rust there too. Curious would a mach hood fit on a 72 coupe?

Same dimensions.  I saw the trunk key lock was missing.  No biggie.  You have a perfect rebuild Mustang.  Not much to do but some rust areas to replace and some other details, but a good project car.  Shoot us a shot of the rust spot behind the driver's seat.  It could just be a repair job or a complete pan replacement.  As far as the roof is concerned, you will need to take the vinyl off and sand paper it off to the bare metal (or sand/bead blast) it to bare metal, then fill in the holes with some sort of filler, depending on the size of the holes.

Yeah its a fllor plan replacement but the car runs nicely so not bad for a grand!

There are not too many aftermarket sheet metal items for your year car so look for a "donor" car, one that has been in a front end collision. 1971 and 72 parts are almost identical so consider that. You may be able to use Cougar sheetmetal but I can't verify that as my Ford Car Parts book doesn't cover Cougars.

from what Ive gathered on the car its a 3 owner car, I tracked down the previous owner through the guy I bought it from, who bought it from a  cousin back in like 78.  He had let it sit and the poor thing fell into disrepair. It acually came with 2 note books of receipts/repairs ect So the car comes with its own "carfax report" lol The guy took care of the hard part and rebuilt the motor,  guy Im getting it from took a bath on it I feel bad but thats the nature of the beast. He appernetly paid 2200 for it and was trying to sell it for 1500.  I offered a 1000, at first I was turned down but after about 2 weeks the guy called me back and asked if I was still interested, apparently their moving and wont have anyplace for it. I didnt really either but like I had said it was a deal I couldnt pass up.  Been using a mustangs unlimited catalog  for parts and pricing. will in the next week or 2 be bringing it into the building and going through it with a finetooth comb to see what other problems may exist. Is a Chiltons good for this or am I gonna want to get a restore guide instead. Not only is this my first restore but its really my first nuts and bolt mechanical "learner" car. Can to a lot of minor things but have never tore one down to the block so this should be interesting.  More pics coming soon and will be posting regularlly as I go through it. Thinking this will be more mod then original restore. But looking to work towards something like...[attachimg=1]

O, I got it here, trunk and gas tank or definate replacements.  Having a little trouble getting her started though.  I'm thinking the fuel pump is bad. I done an ignition test and cant hear the pump turning, if I gas the carb she fires up and dies after the gas is burned out, that or I have a plug in my line somewhere. Theres a small filter up next to the engine where you can see if its getting gas and so far nothing is coming through.  I patched the tank for now to try and get this problem lined up while waiting on a new tank.  Any questions you guys have about the stang please just ask, this is not only my first restore project but also I learner car as far as mechanics so....opinions are always welcome.

I think so but I think it was only clogged I used an air compresser and blew it out worked fine after.
