Here is a few pics the mustang I bought
« on: February 02, 2010, 11:07:32 AM »
Attached are a few pics of the car and engine.  I plan on giving the engine a good bath and get it cleaned up.

Be very careful washing that engine.  Each cylinder has its' own coil, and if you get those wet, you run the risk of shorting out the coil, and it will cost you over $200 each to get replaced.  Ask me how I know.

Oh wow!  Thanks for telling me that before I was on here complaining that my car would not start after cleaning the engine...

Is there a thread on cleaning your engine the proper way?

Wrap anything electrical with plastic.  Saran type wrap works, then tape it shut so  that water doesn't get into it.  That includes your MSD and your coils.  Don't take it to a  car wash with the wand, because you can't control where the overspray goes.  Use a stiff brush like a carburetor cleaning round brush and use a solution of "Dawn" brand dish soap and water.   If you have some oil leak around your valve covers and oil pan, you may have to use a wire brush, but be careful not to knock off any paint. Yours doesn't look all that dirty, so maybe just an old rag with the soap solution will work.  Then just rinse it off with the garden hose, being careful to stay away from the electrical components.  Don't use a sprayer, and don't put your thumb over the end of the hose.  If the first try doesn't get it as clean as you want, then hit it again.

Thank you for those tips.  I will be sure to do the things you advised of.

Do you know how to clean that K&N filter?  (It looks very much like a K&N)  If not, get back.  You have to use a special cleaning kit.
If that is not a K&N, then that's one of the first things you should get.

No I have never cleaned one.  I will go buy a kit though.

Make sure it is a K&N before you invest in the kit.  The picture is kinda dark, so I can't be for sure.  The K&N is made from cotton, so can be cleaned, and will last for a million miles.  If the one you have is paper, then buy a K&N.  They filter out so much more dust than the paper filters and last forever with proper maintenance.
