Topic: 1985 Mustang Motor I.D. help

Hi all new here and 1st time Mustang owner.

So I just got a 1985 Mustang convertible .

The motor was changed to a V8 302 I think how or where would I look for the Eng. vin or casting code to find out what year the motor is.


The body and under frame has no rust at all very well taken care of but I do have to replace the soft top.

The manufacturing date will be in front on the driver's side just below the distributor.

This is what I found   6L17F  I tried a search on the net but nothing.

You're halfway there. The code breaks down as: 6 = 1976 or 1986; L = November; 17 = 17th day; F = inspector or assembliers ID. You should look at the block casting part number which should be located on the lower right rear of the block hidden by the starter, meaning you need to remove the starter. There should also be a casting date code there as well.
The VIN marking may be on the left rear of the block, which seems to be the general concensus of its location.

Well, i must say that you have gone for a nice choice, to be honest. The mustang 1985 convertible is still one of the hottest vintage cars out there, in my arguable opinion! After all, which car can boast the masculine appearance of the Mustang? I think it was really essential that you changed the motor to V8 302 for that power surge. Anyway, make sure that you do not forget to replace the soft top!
