1965 mustang rf wheel brake problem.
« on: August 22, 2008, 04:46:39 PM »
The problem is that when I hit the brakes it pulls to the right. I have taken it apart and examined every thing and have adjusted it several times and its ok for a little bit and then goes back to pulling to the right again. I think there's a defective part, but don't which one. Anybody have an answer for this. Thanks

Three things come to mind.  The first is maybe you have a leaky wheel cylinder getting fluid on the shoe.  Two- the automatic adjuster is not on there right and adjusts too tight too soon.  If this is the case, then you would have a difficult time getting the drum off.  And third - the drum is grooved.  If that is the case, then get it turned or get a new drum.  I will take a picture of mine with the drum off tomorrow so  you can compare.

I did have trouble getting the drum off and had to take a screwdriver and adjuster spoon to undue it to take the drum off. Did not see any fluid.

Ok, make sure that automatic adjuster is on right.  Look at the driver's side to compare.  The little fat "L" shaped piece of metal that hits the grooves on the adjuster must be just right.  When you have it right, you should be able to turn the drum fairly easily and just hear a "hiss" of rubbing.  If you have a difficult time turning the drum, then it is too tight.  Both sides must be exactly the same.  Let us know.......

My friend and I got at the brakes today and found the Right Front was fine, but the Left Front was not. Live and learn. Thanks for your help.

By any chance do you know where I can find a pair of polyurethane washers? Not insulators for shocks or steering stabilizers. I saw red ones being used on exhaust brackets, and I called Midas because thats where i thought saw them, but they said they did not have them. Thanks
