So about a month or so ago i replaced the input seal in my rear because it appeared to be leaking. But when we took out the old seal it looked brand new so assuming it must have been fault i put the new seal in any way but it continues to leak. Any one have any ideas at what i should do?

Can you tell if the pumpkin is bent. Maybe someone jacked it up by the pumpkin and bent it. Other than using an RTV sealant, I don't think there is much you can do if the pumpkin is bent. But, most likely the cover is bent, and not the pumpkin. Check out the cover and if it is bent, then just get a new cover.

From what i see it is all comming from the front where the drive shaft comes into the rear but i will check that cover and see if it has a good seal all the way around

OK, I thought you were talking about the rear of the pumpkin. Sorry. The seal Needs to be perfectly clean when you put it in. How old is that rear pumpkin? Possibly it was driven with a worn out seal, and the race is worn.

i had my mechanic change out the seal only a month a go and i notice that it is still leaking. i know that it has new 3.73 gears but from what it looks like the pumpkin is original to the car which would make it just about ten years old.

Then, take it back to the same mechanic and show him his work was not done right. It will be up to him to fix the leaking problem. You have already paid for the fix, now it is up to him to fix it.

pull the yoke off the rear and see if its worn . if the yoke has a grove or ware marks around the shaft it will leak. also if the retaining spring in the seal fell off when you installed the seal it will leak also.

yeah so my mechanic didnt like when i asked if he might have put the seal in wrong and if he would want to put another one in. and now he is telling me that i need a whole new rear which i think is Bull my car only has 60k on it. so tonight me and my friend are going to take a look at it and depnding on what i see i may drop the whole rear out but i will be posting pics of the rear and the seal in question. does any one know what the specs are on how much fluid should be in my rear?? it would really help me out

Just fill it up until it starts running out the plug. You can buy the pumps that fit on the quart bottles. I suggest 75W90 weight synthetic gear oil. But, you have to get that leak stopped first. With only 60K on that rear, I would suspicion the gasket (SEAL), and not the race with grooves.

thank you soaring but my mechanic put in 80w90 non synthetic w/ possi traction additive and he is obviously an asshole because it isnt even in the input seal it is the pumkin cover that he was to lazy to buy the gasket for so he used RTV and applied it like an idiot and that is the sorce of my leak from what i can see now i would like to put in full synthetic so how am i supposed to get the fluid out of my axel tubes so that i can put that differnt oil in and my local parts store closes at 8 soo a quick reply would be awesome.

by the way i have the car up on jack stands that are placed on the axel in case that makes a difference in how to get the oil out

The easiest way to get the oil out is to take it to a jiffy lube place and have them suck it out, then add the synthetic. But, if you are still having leaking problems, you need to get that fixed first. If it is now the rear of the pumpkin, then you are going to have to take that cover off anyway to replace the gasket, and that will drain that dino lube. Don't be in a hurry to get this done. Take your time and make sure you have all your ducks in a row before taking action.

the thing is i have the pumkin cover off right now and the way the car sits with it on the jack stands a lot of the fluid is pooling in front of the diff and i can't get any of it out. although last night i did just buy 80w90 non synthetic because i didnt trust my self getting all of that fluid out. and that is what my genius mechanic put in there so, i fixed what i needed to fix because it looks like my mechanic applied the RTV very poorly also it looks like he pryed off the pumkin cover with a screw driver and left huge gashes on the inside of the cover. although if any one has a good idea to get the fluid out i am all for it because i would like to put synthetic in it.(i did think about jacking up the front of the car but i am not to sure how that will work out with the back on stands)

If you can't get a rag in there to soak it up because of the gears, try using a shop vac with the skinny nozzle attached and see if that works. If not. then get the car off the jack stands (both front and rear) , then raise the front so the oil leaks back to the rear of the pumpkin. You can also take the axle off at the springs then just dump out the oil. That's really not a hard job. Just 4 "U" bolts. Have a shop jack under the pumpkin if you decide to do this.

This may be a bit late as a recomendation, but I bought a jug of 90W gear oil with a pump. The pump works both ways, "out" (your current predicament) and "in", your goal. An 8 inch will take 4 1/2 pints and a 9 inch will take 5 pints to fill. Fill is defined as being within 1/2 inch of the fill hole. If it drips out that's OK, if it pores out, you have too much.

i think what i am going to try to do is get the front of my car up on jack stands to so that the car can sit level because at the moment my cars rearend is about 20 inches off the ground and with the car sitting like that the oil is going to pour out of the hole way befor it has taken enough oil. although i think that it is a little sketchy jacking up the front end while the back is sitting on jack stands

haHhHHh I cant get it down because if i put my jack underneith my diff to let it down then the fluid is foing to run out all over my jack and all over my garage floor and that is a one way ticket to getting my mom on my case so any other sujjestions
(and i am not sure of the purpose of the large mickey mose picture but i like it)
