from the ad

v8, 289  Runs good

Power Steering and brakes. 1 year old carb.

I called the guy and all parts are stock besides carborator as mentioned and battery and alternator as expected. The exterior appears tobe in decent shape from the pictures with expected wear and tear. Both rear quarter panels have some bondo work done, how extensive I do not know, but enough for it to be mentioned and the passenger side floor is rusted through. The front seats are in need on reupholstering with signifigant tears. The engine apparently runs fine and the transmission is also in working order. (automatic 3 speed)

Given this information what price range sounds decent and what other information should I ask for when I talk to him next.

Also anyone have any idea what I am generally looking at for cost in terms of metal work for replacing the floor?

The pictures in ad are attached

quick replies appriciated!

It's hard to estimate the value of a car without seing it but from what you say, I would not offer much more than $2.000 for a basic 68 coupe Mustang. Fastbacks are much more popular and the double of this amount would be correct. The replacement sheet metal is not very expensive but if you get it done by a body shop you will have many hours billed for the job and once the quarters and floors are removed you may discover much more rust damage.
You may also want to ask the door tag numbers to make sure it is a number matching car. Its value will depend of that once your car is restored. Once you have your door tag numbers you can decode them with one of the websites listed at Google.
You can also check at Ebay.com to see how much Mustangs in this condition are sold. They have hundreds of them listed.
Good luck and feel free to post a message if you decide to purchase it.

Did the guy ask for a specific price?  Some people dont know how much their cars are really worth and you can sometimes offer less.  I picked up a 69 in good shape for 1000 so it all depends.
