Topic: pertronix igniter advice

Hello, I am starting to shop for the Pertronix Ignitor.  It seems that there are different models of this. (See below).  After seeing these, now I don't know which one to get.  Also, I read that the Igniter II is not as reliable as the original model.  Is that true?
Will you advise please?

I have a '66 289 "A" engine with the standard carb on it.

I had ignition problems for a couple of years on a 66 289 'A' code hardtop. I put a Pertronix I in the distributor and the problems went away. That was done about five years ago. Unless you race and have a lot of money, don't bother with the dual point types or the Pertronix II systems. I did not use their higher voltage coil but you may consider it. It is bigger in diameter than a stock Ford coil so a larger mounting bracket is required.
Note: some tachometers will not work on Pertronix systems.

I bought the 70 buck original pertronix ignition and used my original coil with no problem.  I have also heard the II system has problems but I can't verify that.  I just know my original pertronix system works to perfection. Mine starts right up and runs like a scared rabbit.

Explain your problem further.  What exactly is going on?

Soaring, because of me staring the car up  to adjust it I must have fouled the plugs I have found that the pertronix is okay but I will need to change the plugs and then I will see what happens.    Also  do you know of anyone that has a good c4 for sale?

Putting in a pertronix has absolutely nothing to do with fouling the plugs.  Take out #1 and show me a picture of it.  No, I don't know of anyone who has a C4 for sale.  Check with the for sale on here, then check with Craigslist and Ebay.

I have the Pertronix Ignitor II with the Pertronix Coil and have not had any problems to speak of.  I used to have trouble starting and after I put this in, no more problems.

I only went with the II because it was the later model and I had a coupon to get 20% off my total purchase of $100+.  I think the II cost $99 and the Coil cost $39 so I basically got the II for the same price as the I.  My main goal was just to convert to electronic.

I've wondered what the real performance difference is between the I and II as well as how it compares to MSD or other electronic ignition systems.  I don't do any racing, just drive around town with my '68 302 2v.

I don't see how it is possible to perform any better than the Petronix original. I can hardly hear the starter engage before my old 289 roars to life.  I have been extremely pleased with it for about 2 years now.  It certainly beats the hell out of the points system.  And, I only paid $65 for mine because I could use my original coil.  So, the original model is about 1/2 the price of the II with a new flamethrower coil.

Soaring, Did you hook up your pertronix by by-passing the pink resister wire?  I didn't and it works just fine.  Some say it won't work that way.  Just wondering ...

Nah, I just hooked it up just like the directions said.  Many say that you have to go from the key switch to get the positive 12 volts that is needed and to bypass the pink resistor wire, but I decided to take the easy way out and hook it up like the directions said.  She works just fine for me. I can't speak for the II though.  I have the original that I paid 65 bux for.

I hooked my II up exactly as the directions indicated.  Here's a link to check the differences between the I, II and there is now a III.
