Topic: New to Mustangs, I have a Dash Question

Hey there,

I'm relatively new to the classic 'Stang scene, but I have my heart set on a '67 or a '68.  The only problem is that the dash looks like a dinosaur (no offense to the old timers here).  I realize making the interior completely modern just isn't reasonable, but I would like to know if it is possible to make some drastic changes.  For example, a new instrument configuration, digital is a must but I do no like the layout.  Say a more modern center console and possibly a roof console.  I'm just interested to know if there is a way to make the interior look a bit more modern (when I get my hands on this car, it will have a lot of modern technology).  I thought that my problem is not uncommon, but I cannot find any kits or info on the web.

So, any ideas or pointers?

I hope to have a great experience here and eventually be able to return some favors.

Welcome. I'm one of those old timers, and I have a philosophy - 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. To your instrument cluster question, look at www.npdlink.com for conversions. They start at $600 and require some additional items - read 'more stuff'. If you want a classic, keep it classic; if you want a modern look, try the 2009 Mustang.

Indeed, I love the look of the old Mustangs, I just want a little more umph than stock.  I'm a millenium child with millenium tastes.  EFI, Superchargers, Digital Gauges, 5-point Racing Harness.  Although I gotta say I'm still a fan of manual transmissions, adds a whole new dynamic to the driving experience.

  I was turning high 12's in the mid 60's in a modified HP Fairlane, raced the Baja in the late 70's in a VW (I finished), broke my knee and my back in a couple of off-road 'toys' of mine, built satellites for a living, designed computers (different company) and I still prefer my pure stock 65 and 66 Mustangs.

You can't have it both ways IMO.  If you want a modern hotrod, then buy a modern hotrod.  If you want a classic Mustang, then keep it original.  Yeah, I know guys who have basterdized their original classics to be something they were not meant to be.  And they were stupid to do it IMO.  If you want a modern hotrod, buy a modern hotrod and leave the classics unmollested to those of us who appreciate the classic as it was designed to be.
