Topic: Magnum 500 - 16 ou 17"

Hi there,

I new here, and iīm very happy to participate in this forum.
Iīm from Brazil and love mustangs! They rock!

Well, iīm restoring a mach1 70 that i bought in 2002 and thereīs one thing thatīs making me sick: what rim to put and the size of them.

I donīt want to put modern rims. I like the magnum 500, but would like to put something bigger than the classic 15 inches.

I found at internet some stores the sells the magnum 500 size 16 and 17 (the old style, not the billet). Does anyone have one of those, and can put some photo here? I donīt know if will come out nice.
Also, i was wondering to put a 17" with a tire with raised white letters (i saw the goodyear GT II).
What you guys think?

Here is a picture of my Mag 500's with the Goodyear II tires, but they are 15".  I have never seen a mag 500 that was bigger than 15"

Well, right now, Mustangs unlimited is undergoing routine maintenance, but I looked in their catalog, and sure enough, they have the 17X8" magnum 500's listed.

i like 17's on the classic but that's about the max i'd use. personally i like the look of the 15s with some very meaty tires on the rear

On the large dia. wheels like the 16" & 17" magnum 500s, it appears the spoke/bolt center section is the same used throughout the size ranges, they just put a larger outer ring section on for the larger tire.  This changes all the nice proportions of the Magnum 500 giving more chrome ring when viewing.  I don't particularly care for it and I looked at larger 16"& 17" 500 rims myself.  I ended up stepping up 1 size to a 15" instead of stock 14" for a 65-66 Mustang.  It didn't visually change much in size, but I think if you go up to 17" you might not like the look.

You can use a photo editor to calculate and change the wheel size before you buy to see what you will like.  But remember to keep the black 5-spoke section the same size thru cut-n-pasting.  I looked at 14s thru 17s with a photo-editor before I bought to make sure I would be happy with the final size, since they are a big investment.  A little time before you buy will pay off in the end.

I only saw the larger magnum 500īs at internet. And i just had the same feeling: Whoever designed the 16 and 17", didnīt follow the proportions. And this is not good....
I will spend lots of time to decide exactly whatīs going to fit best my mach1.

Yeah, I have to agree.  Anything bigger than the 15" just doesn't look right on the 65-66 models.

Here's an interesting shot of some custom 17's on a '65 that were on a recent ebay car.  I don't think they look too bad either.  Note that they kept the wheel rim proportions the same as a 14/15 but increased the center bolt/spoke dia. size, which is opposite the way Mag 500 17's are made.  If they made a Mag 500 with the same proportions of rim/spoke as 14/15s, they might not look too bad but to my knowledge, they don't.  Anyway, these were interesting 17's and I thought I'd share them with you.

i think with tires with raised white letters would just match perfect and give a nice classic looking.

I guess because I am old school, I don't usually like big rims on a classic, but those actually look decent.

I'm not usually a fan of the new rims on old cars but those look damn good.

17" wheels look OK, but the skinny sidewalls of the tires look awkward, and that's the nicest word I can use. just an opinion, don't shoot me.

Yeah, if you are going to go with 17" wheels, you need the appropriate tires to match them.  Old mustangs need fat tires.
