Looking to verify if drivetrain is original
« on: February 11, 2010, 08:09:13 PM »
Hello all. I have recently purchased a 1968 Mustang coupe. The car had 351 emblems and was advertised as having a 361W i it so I was'nt to concerned with keeping it original. I am now restoring it & beleave that the engine is indeed a 289. My warranty number is 8f01c134907 & the block has the stampings of C6AE-6015-C   (7E15)  &  a big 2 on it behind the starter. The tranny has the numbers C6AP-70027-B   (4A)  & A BIG B on it. I had no problems decoding the V.I.N. but no luck with the drive trane. I would appreciate some direction or help.

The "C" as your 5th digit incicates it started out as a 2V 289.  Jim will come on here shortly to verify all the other numbers.

Greetings Gary,
Before I go on - THIERRY, your new format sucks.
Gary, your block is a 289 block, cast on May 15, 1967. There is one more date involved, the actual engine assembly date, but that can wait. The transmission is a bit of a mystery. The number you show is formatted incorrectly but as near as I can guess the item is a cover plate p/n and not the actual transmission p/n. If it's an automatic, it is most likely a C4. That is about as much as I can tell you for now.

If your transmission is a C4 there should be a tag on the driver side of the tranny on the servo cover. For a  1968 289 it would be  PEE-C1 the Id Number, a service number, a assembly part number, and a built date and shift code number.

If it was the transmission from a 351 it would be a FMX transmission. All 351 Mustangs 1969 and 1970 had FMX trannys and the tag is on the driver side  also but the ID number would be something like PHB-E , PHB-H, PHB-E1 or PHB-P  plus all the other stuff on the tag like the C4

Since your block is  289 I would think it is a C4 like Jim has stated but if the pulled the tranny from a 351 Mustang it is possible it is a FMX and since it would fit someone might have thought the motor was a 351 and put on the emblems. But this is total speculation on my part. I would have to see a picture to be sure.

The C6AP-70027-B number has me guessing  but it is most likely a C4 just from the cast number, The pump body casting number is useless in determining the year as the same casting number was used on most pump bodies from 1964 through 1981.

Here a link which might help id your tranny   http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/wiki/Transmission_Identification

There were no numbers matching parts back before 1967 or '68, so if the parts were put into the car before then, then you are SOL.  Don't worry about it though, just drive it like it is and smile everytime somebody compliments your car.   ;D

It's a '72 transmission.

It's a 1971 on type tranmission from a Maverick. It has a 72 assembly part number of D2DP-DA built April 6, 1972, second shift. (The Ford worker that assembled it was 5 ft 9 in, weighed 155 lbs, had a mustache and was married with two kids in grade school.) That transmission was set up for a column shift and Mustangs are all floor shift types so check and see if there is an arm extending down fron the accelerator assemble in the engine compartment with a short (about 6 inch) cable to the transmission. That's the down shift linkage.

The Ford worker also has a wife who works as a bar waitress at the local bar near tne assembly plant, and if you order a beer, she will give you a smile and turn away.  That's what all those numbers mean.   ;D

Yeah, she is a hot blonde who drives an '05 Mach vert.  She drinks Canadian VO, smokes unfiltered Camel cigrarettes  and drives with the windows  and top down during the winter.  Tough broad.   ;D
