Exhaust, X or H pipe ???
« on: June 16, 2010, 08:10:51 AM »
I have a stock 1991 5.0 LX and I want to change the exhaust. My question is. What system is better the X-pipe or the H-pipe ?

The "X" pipe allows the exhaust gases to escape a  little faster than the "H" pipe, so if it were mine I would put the "X" pipe on.  The "H" pipe is certainly better than two straight pipes, but not quite as good as the X.  You will get a tad difference in the drone of the mufflers, and the H will give you a tad deeper drone, but not worth the difference in power.  The H pipe gases have to make a sharp turn to pump gases from one pipe into the other, whereas the X is pretty much a straight shot.  Go with the X.

if your car has the stock v8 exhaust then your car has a stock h pipe in it, i would go x pipe or a power chamber. (x pipe is still better)

To maintain the noise level requirement and gain horsepower a "X" pipe is better than a standard "H" pipe. The best exhaust system is one that uses long headers without mufflers, noisy but more power.  A power chamber (expansion chamber) is a gimmick that gives a better scavenger effect in a narrow RPM range, again with mufflers. It's a two cycle trick. The Arvenode system used a similar technique. It is all part of the "get it in, use it and get it out" effectively goal.
