67 mustang wont move anymore
« on: January 06, 2010, 01:13:39 AM »
hey, i have a 1967 mustang coup. It was originally a 6 cylinder car but somewhere down the line somebody through in a 302. Its got the original transmision with 120000 miles on it. Well, it was sitting for 5 years in somebodys yard before i bought it, i got it running and tryed driving it and it goes forward or reverse for maybe 7 seconds then seems to start slipping. When it starts slipping u hear a faint whining noise and sometimes if you look at the rear wheel it seems to be twitching trying to move but the motor just revs freely and u go nowheres.

Also right after it starts slipping,  if you put it in neutral then back into drive it will move a little further then the same thing happens again. I have checked the fluid many times, it has plenty. Im kind of at a loss as to what it could be or how to fix it.  I dont know much about automatics so can anyone give me some suggestions????

Is there a way to tighten them? I heard there should be 2 bolts on the outside of the trans i could tighten.  Maybe a filter?

Yes, you can tighten the bands on a C4.  Go to the FAQ section and look under the heading of "Transmissions."  Just for grins, take one of the back wheels off and see if the emergency brake was left on during those 5 years of sitting.  The shoes will weld themselves to the drums, and you will get that same kind of reaction from the car.  Just see if you can turn the drum by hand while in neutral.  If it is stuck, you won't be able to move it.
