'65 Fastback at painters-HOME, now waiting for upholstery!
« on: December 26, 2009, 10:27:52 AM »
Another day or two and she'll be ready to take to the painters!
I've told you before it's a "10-footer", so hopefully they'll get it all corrected and she'll be like new soon.  I'm going to add the shelby stripes in red and get the correct '65 Deluxe interior in it once repainted.  Then, by spring 2010 it will be ready for cruising and look like the below photo.  I can't wait!

Same color I presume?  She'll be a beauty when it is painted.  You will find that refurbishing the interior is a relatively easy job doing it yourself.  The only thing I would have farmed out would be the headliner if you decide to replace that.

Oh for sure.  If you notice in the pics the entire inside is gutted.

Well she left for the painters today!

'65 Fastback going to painters- UPDATED 4 WEEKS!!!
« Reply #7 on: January 28, 2010, 07:07:09 PM »
If you want to follow the progress on my paint, you can see 1 week, 2, 3, and the latest WEEK 4 pics on my web page (see link in my avatar below).  Earlier this week it was in dark gray primer, and then yesterday it was painted black.  Today they got it layed out on the hood and actually started painting the red stripes on the rear.  I also came back today from the powder coaters on several parts, now even with "CHROME" powder coating.
Here's the hood layout:

Then here's the red stripes on the rear.  They should have all red stripes on tomorrow, and possibly even the clear coat.  HAVIN' FUN!  ;D

My 03 F-150 is a 10 footer too,  It's not until you wash it and wax it that all the little scratches appear.

Re: '65 Fastback at painters-UPDATED ALMOST HOME!
« Reply #13 on: February 18, 2010, 10:02:40 AM »
Its been just about 6 weeks now, and the paint shop is thinking I should have it back home on Friday of this week or Monday at the latest.  It is being reassembled and lined up now.
Then, I'll have it for about a week and it will next go to the upholstery shop where they expect to have it for a week or two.
My patience is starting to wane and excitement is starting to overtake it.

What color scheme did you decide for the interior?

Nope.  Not yet.  It will be another few weeks yet.
Right now, I have it back home letting some 60 degree weather and sun get to it.  The painter wants about 4 weeks of cure time, because of our recent brutal winter, before he does final color sanding and polishing.  So, I'm parking it outside in the sun when the weather lets me.
The upholsterer will come and get it the week of the 15th (next week!) and have it for a couple weeks.  By then the car should be cured out enough to go back to the painters shortly after it returns.  :)
I started putting some chrome stuff back on, but then I thought it would be best to let the painters work with nothing in their way, so I stopped.  Plus I'm sure I'll have that white sanding/polishing slop to clean off and that will simplify the cleanup with no chrome. :P
In the mean time, I've been prepping my stainless trim.  It's rather fun!  I've always loved polishing metal (brass, copper, etc.) but I've never tried stainless before.  I've been taking out the dents and straightening and having a good time at it.  Plus, they look a zillion times better than before.
Here's the latest pic.

Yeah, leave the chrome off until the paint job is complete.  The wet sanding produces a ton of yellow crap that will get under the chrome and cause you problems with rusting later.   If I were you, I'd take that hood trim back off.  She sure is going to be a pretty thang when finished.  Your painter is right to let it cure for at least a month before clear coating it.  You are lucky to have warm weather in Mizzu this time of the year.  We are all waiting with baited breath to see her finished.   I like the way you took the red racing stripe down to the ground.  Looks really good.
