Classic Car Insurance
« on: June 27, 2008, 10:13:31 AM »
Does anyone have any feedback on any of these Insurance companies?

American Collectors (americancollectors.com)
Classic Auto (classicins.com)
Grundy (grundy.com)
J.C. Taylor (jctaylor.com)
American Hobbyist (americanhobbyist.com)
Hagerty (hagerty.com)
Sneed/Elite Collector (elitecollectorcar.com)

I got my car appraised at $15k and am looking to up the coverage from liability.

Most of those have restrictions attached to them such as you can only drive a certain number of miles each year, they have to be locked in a garage, etc.  It depends on your use of the car that will determine which insurance company you need.  I contacted Hagerty and a few of the others, and their restrictions did not fit the way I drive my 65, so I simply added it to my Mach's  Esurance policy for about the same amount of money, and I can drive as many miles as I wish and not "have" to store it in a garage at night.
I suggest you contact all of them to see which one if any give you the best deal, and if none of them offer you what you want, then check into Esurance and AIG.  All the rest such as Geico, State Farm, etc. are way too expensive.

Mileage restriction is only a problem if they actually come take a picture of the odometer right?  I know I don't want all the restrictions that several of these have to limit it to show cars.  No fun in that.
Have you ever had a claim with Esurance?  I want to be sure to avoid companies that are a hassle to actually pay out.  My biggest concern is vandalism or parking lot damage and these companies all offer a $0 deductible.

Yes, I had a claim with Esurance about two months ago.  My wife hit the guard pipe that protects the gas pumps at stations, and screwed up the rear quarter panel on my Mach.  I called them and they had an adjuster out the next day.  The adjuster asked me if I had a favorite body shop, and I told him about the local one here that has worked on my 65 that I liked.  The body shop guy called me two days later and told me he had the check from Esurance.  So, in less than 5 days total I had my repaired Mach back.

Wow, that's awesome.  My Farmers agent quoted me $190 annually for full coverage but limited driving as a antique and $500 deductible.  He basically told me if I had an accident and the claim agent felt my habits were not in line with the policy, they would still cover the  damage but update my policy to more accurately reflect real.  Sort of like if I got hit in a Walmart parking lot.

In looking at Classic Auto, they charge the same whether garaged or not and they put in writing that it's for pleasure driving beyond shows, parades, clubs, etc. $0 deductible, under 5K miles (which I think will suit me) for $158 annually.

My Farmers agent went ahead with the change cause it's actually cheaper than just plain liability, but I'm going to do some more research on customer reviews and BBB.

That sounds like some good prices for full coverage.  I pay 440 bux for the two cars for 6 months.  I'm 64 years old and a perfect driving record.  I may check with Classic Auto to see what they quote me for the 65.

Did some more research...
Classic Auto is underwritten by Infinity Insurance (IPACC.com) and American Modern (AMIG.com) and I didn't see anything negative at the BBB for any of the 3.

I also discovered that you can go to AMIG.com which redirects you to elitecollectorcar.com that I mentioned above with Sneed, but this appears to be for anything underwritten by AMIG (since they routed me to it). The online quoted $158 with 50/50/50 and it offers a provision for driving to work 2 times/week and state pleasure use beyond shows and such.

I also noticed that while the Classic and Elite online quote process gives the option to select no to the garage, the FAQ's for both actually state that it must be garaged.  Not a problem for me, but wanted to clear up my earlier mis-understanding.

Yeah, my research a few years ago stated that it mut be garaged, and limited mileage in most cases with these classic and vintage insurance companies.  I daily drive mine, and put between 8 and 10K on the odometer.  Maybe I should get a beater pickup and store the 65 and get the cheaper insurance.  Nah, I love driving my 65 too much to do that.
