ok guys i just got a 67 mustang in parts and im wondering about the rear end Im not sure if its the original but i think it is. this is my question how can i tell if it is a 9 or an 8 inch rear end it is a non fast back car but it was a original 289 4 speed. but i don't know if that would have a 9 im hopeing it is. it is 5 lug. let me know how i tell in if these cars came with a 9 or not.

Those are pretty easy to tell the difference. First most they only had 9 inch rear ends back then and the pumpkin are huge I have a pic check.

on an 8 in. you can use a socket and ratchet on all the nuts that holds 3rd member in houseing,on 9in. you have to use a wrench on the bottom nuts .

If you go to the classic Mustang FAQ, you can get all the information you want about your differential.  Just click on  section IX and read your heart out.  Only the K codes had the 9 inch back then , so more than likely you have an 8 inch unless someone has replaced the original rear with a K code 9 inch. I doubt that is the case.
