changing gear to drive ploblems 65 automatic..

hi...i'm new to the forum and finally got my dream car a 65 mustang coupe...the car has not been started since april and not been tag since 95....i'm having problems with shifting gears, my 65 is automatic...when i change to drive its not wanting to go in gear,its like in neutral...but put in park,neutral,reverse, no problems...just when i try to put in drive...also the shifter has alot of play in it...please if anyone has any suggestion please reply...thanks...  :-?
