Wheels for a 1967
« on: May 07, 2009, 09:39:21 AM »
I think I have settled on Magnum 500 wheels for my convertible. I have looked at quite a few purchase sites and noticed the styled Steel design were offered during 65',66' and 67' but I don't like as well and the Magnum design. What year/s were the Magnum's offered on the Mustang ? and what optioned cars? I just want to make sure I am getting wheels that are close to the same era my car was built.

Thank you.

JJ

They will be period correct.  I believe it was either 68 or 69 when they became an option Justemember they only come in 14" and 15" sizes, and they are pretty expensive, so make sure you are not going to want a larger wheel in the future.  I absolutely love mine.  I have them on my 65.

Glen,
Did you put 14's or 15's on the 65'? I currently have 14's on my 67' but I am considering increasing to 15's. Your rims are exactly what I am looking at buying. Do you think 15x7" on the front and 15X8's on the rear will work without rubbing?

I put 14's on mine because I didn't want to have to change out the speedometer gear at the transmission.  Remember, you cannot rotate your tires if you have a 15X8 at the rear and a 15X7 on the front.  So, decide with that in mind, but it will work without a problem if that is the way you want to go.  If it was mine, I would put 15X7 on all four corners.  That would give you that classic look, but still be practical for rotation purposes.

Glen,

Great point on the different sized width rims, I won't do that. I am not concerned about the speed-0 because it is not a daily driver. What are you thoughts on 15X8's all the way around? I want to put a slightly wider tread on the car but don't want rubbing?

No Jeff, the 15X8 is too wide for the front.  You will have rubbing.  I would get 15X7 on all four corners.  I think you will be pleased with the stance of the Mustang and still have that classic look.   The size of the tires comes into play here too.  My suggestion is 225/160/15.  Do not, and I repeat, do not buy Goodyear tires.  They are slick as snot on glass when it rains.  Ask me how I know.  :o  Goodrich and  Dunlop and some of the Japanese brands are good such as Toyo and Yokohama.    Personally, I like the white letter tires.  It just seems to give the car some class as opposed to black tires.  http://www.coopertire.com/html/products/tires_passenger.aspx?page=cobra_gt&search=bySize&twtd=225&artw=60&rd=15  Good luck with it, and send pictures when you are finished re-shoeing that girl.

Glen,
Thanks, I trust your judgment, I will check out the tires you are recommending. I too like the white letters out, The way we drove our cars back in the mid 70's when I was in high school. Fortunately, I was able to own and drive many 60's muscle cars when they were only 5-6 years old. I will only put domestic named tires on my classic Ford, nothing else!!

Have a good weekend.

I ran Cooper tires on my Toyota for damn near 50 K miles.  They are tough as nails and have a good warranty.  Click on that URL I gave you above to see how the Cooper Cobras look. That's the next tire I am going to put on all my Mustangs.

And nobody there has 15X8's on the front of a 67 either.  They just don't fit.  They are too damn wide.  I'm not even sure if you could even find a 15X8 with a 4.25 Back Spacing.  That would be one strange wheel, and even if you could find them, and bought spacers, you would be bumping off the fender because the wheel would be sticking out further than the wheel well.  15X8 on the front = bad idea.

Well,
I did some internet research and found a manufacturer in Portland, OR. and was able to buy right out of their back door at a great savings. I did purchase Mag. 500's 15X7's for the 1967. Now going to do some shopping for some good tires to mount on them, can't wait to see how she looks!! Nice to have found some USA made products for the old girl.

Thank you for the advise.

JJ
