Wheels color
« on: September 27, 2008, 07:05:18 PM »
Not a Mustang, but a Ford and a wheel question.   I just bought this 1981 Ford F-150 with these red wheels that used to be steel styled wheels.  I want to return the wheels to their original condition.  What do I do?  Sand blast them and go with that, or choose a cheaper way and spray paint them another color?  If chosen the cheaper way, what color?

Sandblasting them would be the best easy way. The cheap one like you suggested might work but whatever color you choose, the smallest paint chip showing a red spot will stand out so the result might look cheap too. There is also a cheap hard way with the use of sand paper or chemical paint removers. I tried that in my young days and I will never do it again :)

The thought of using a chemical stripper crossed my mind for about 2 seconds.  No thanks.  I am going to look for a local sand stripper to see what it will cost.  Obviously, the tires will have to be removed, and when the stripping is done they will have to be balanced again.  However, If I change the paint on those wheels from red to the original color, I think I will go that route.  until I get the money to have the stripper do his thing though, they will remain red ;D  Red goes down the road just as well as argent silver.

Well, after further investigation, they are not steel styled wheels, but just simply steel wheels that have to be painted.  I will either settle on black, white, or chrome beauty rings.  Not sure just yet.  Any input?  How about painting them white, and add the chrome beauty rings.  That might be classy, huh?

White.
I think you are right Jim.  The truck is layered from top to bottom in white, red, white and red.  The next color on the botton should be white.  I will also add the chrome trim rings to set it off.  I still have to figure out why the cruise control and the driver's side electric window doesn't work, but that is an easy fix.  The old truck is solid as a rock with only 35K miles on it.

I got the window fixed.  Had to replace the switch.  The motor was good thank God.  That sucker costs a bunch.  I ordered the chrome trim rings today too.  I will try one on the red wheels and snap a shot to see what you guys think.  However, I'll bet that the white wheels with the trim rings will be the winner.  We will see.
