What ignition advance for a 351W ?
« on: May 21, 2007, 02:26:05 PM »
What is the good timing mark for setting the initial advance? I heard that the good value is arround 10° instead of 6° shown in the manuel. The advance is depending of the octane fuel number. Here in europe the number is 95. How much in 1969 ?

I searched the web and all I have found is the posts you submited in other forums
I really don't know the answer and what was answered still doesn't mean anything to me but as the european and north american octane rating can't be compared I guess you will probably get a better answer in a forum with european users. In 1969 there was also a different method to rate octane.
The mechanical stuf is not my domain and I hope you will find the answer.
 Is your Mustang running bad?

My engine seems running good, but I'm asking what would be the best advance setting. Many owners say the good setting is arround 10°. I think that the today octane number is higher than in the past. Thus, the advance would be reduced. I want to know why somes do the opposite.

I think that it is 8*-12* is a good range you might have to try to set your advance forward and igit. to 8 and that might help let me know either way. STANGOUT

Thanks, I read that the most important setting is for high R.P.M. : max advance; initial+mechanical; must be 36° to 38° with vacuum disconnected and plugged. Not yet tried this.
