Vinyl Top
« on: January 30, 2009, 12:49:23 AM »
Hey,
I have a 66 coupe. Want to put a vinyl top on it. Any suggestions advice would be appreciated. Where to find it and how much does it cost. Is it wise to self install or have it done?
Thank You
Lisa

Why do you want to put a vinyl top on your Mustang?  Most classic owners want to get rid of the vinyl tops that were put on at the factory because they create a rust problem for their rooves. (roofs?)  Anyway, I would give that some more thought before deciding to put the vinyl on your roof.

Okay I just had my '66 painted and now we are going ahead with the vinyl top. Doing the vinyl top will compliment the paint job even more. Other than asking my husband, how difficult is it to install this vinyl top? I ordered a black one from NPD. Just curious for some feed back. Thank you

Lisa with all due respect, putting a vinyl top on a classic is like putting a wig over a good head of hair. DON'T DO IT!!!

Thank you for answering. I understand what you are saying but my thought is, because the car is a '66 that they made kabillions of nothing really stands out about them. In all the car magazines you see alot about every year but the '66 unless it's a convertible. With the paint job it will look great. When it is all done I will post a photo before and after and you can give me more constructive criticism then because I really do appreciate it. Thanks :)

You know I have always always loved the classic mustangs. I don't care about any other mustangs other than the 60's. I never thought I would own one but my wonderful husband helped out in that area. Just so you know when you do see the photo-my favorite color is red. But it has to be a certain red. Not orange red either. Going to car shows we see alot of red ALOT. These are just local hokey pokey car shows and I go just to look at all the cars. I just decided that I needed a better color on my car. Can't tell ya what's been done but I hope you like it. I of course just think it's fantastic. It may be a week or so but I will post the photo. Thanks again for your time.

Vinyl tops were quite popular back during the 60's through the mid 80's, but then people wised up, and so did the industry.  They cause rust underneath them, and they are diffiucult to maintain.  But, do as you will.  I just don't agree that putting a vinyl top on a classic mustang is a good idea.

I agree with what has been said but Mustangs a vinyl roof  are getting rare and if the car doesn't stay out in the rain it shouldn't be a problem. Here is a page with useful instructions on how to install a vinyl top. It's not for a Mustang but the process will be the same:
MoparMuscleMagazine.com
If you do decide to install one let us know how it goes. :)

No, it doesn't have to be left out in the rain to get rust underneath the vinyl.  Simple humidity and moisture in the air will cause rust to happen in a matter of a few years.   You cannot help but to drive your Mustang in rain and snow, etc. if you really drive it as I do my 65. We have all kinds of members on several Mustang sites who will advise against it.  If you do it, then you have been forwarned.
