Tire size question
« on: January 21, 2010, 10:41:18 PM »
Im thinking of putting 235/75/15's on my 71. Would i have any clearance issues or could i go bigger?

I have 215/50/16's on mine. Not sure about the 75's. I've seen some pretty big tire on these cars with out modifications. Try to get tehm to let you try one out before locking in on them..

I have 235 60 15's and plenty of room with Magnum 500 wheels on my 73.  You should have no problem with your choice, but why so tall a sidewall?

That was a guess on tire size. Looks like i was pretty close. I like how yours fill out the car so i think i might just go with 235/60/15's.

Tim, what kind of tires are you thinking of?  I have the BF Goodrich Radial T/A's and they wear like iron, but they also spin very easily.  I suspect the motor you are building is going to be stout enough to do the same in your car.

I'm actually thinking of going to 275's in back (there is plenty of room) and even possibly to a drag radial to get more traction.

Well i was actually planning on going with those tires haha. Any recommendations on what i should go with instead then? I found a set of 235/70/15s for cheaper than the 60s i was looking at surprisingly.

The best bang for your buck are the "Cooper" brand of tires.  They even have a white raised letter "Cobra" tire.  They stick like glue to the pavement, and their guarantee is great.  Check them out.

Ok so i got 235/60/15's all around. I got new KYB gas adjust shocks today and put them on. I was told i should get some 600 rate springs for the front and they lower the car 1". Would i have any clearance problems if i put those on and dropped the front 1"? Also i have a 1" sway bar on the front is that big enough or do i need to get the 1 1/8"?

The 1" sway bar is adequate.

Ok thanks. I was concerned that if i got the 1 1/8" that it would be too big and i would have turning issues. But at the same time i was concerned that the 1" was too small.

Front sway bars should be considered in conjunction with rear sway bars.

I agree 1" is adequate unless you are road racing.  A nice 3/4 rear sway bar and you should have a surprisingly neutral set up.

620's up front and 200 pound rate 5 leafs in the rear will give you a set up that is similar to mine.

If you are asking what size  front anti-sway bar for a stock 65  289 Mustang, it is a 5/8 inch bar.  If you are asking what size stock tires, then they are 195-75-14

The 620 springs up front will lower the front some, and is a nice thing to add, but the 5 leaf springs out back would be to stiff IMO.   I guess it would just depend on what eye you chose.  I replaced the old stock 4 leafs with new 4 leafs standard eye, and it leveled out the stance of mine.  I don't have any bone jarring experiences either.  My 2 cents.

Soaring, keep in mind that our 71-73 Clydesdales weigh in at 3600+ pounds depending on options.  With big horsepower the 200 pound rate springs don't wrap up and allow wheel hop as easily and are a good way to avoid the additional cost of underride traction bars.

And you can buy them with a mid eye to lower the back to standard ride height.

I think im going to put some Cal Tracks on mine in the future. From what i have seen of them they seem to work very well to improve traction and minimize wheel hop. And yes Jeff is right there are more than one reason for the suspension upgrades on these cars ;D
