Tach wiring question
« on: March 23, 2010, 10:32:52 PM »
I bought this new summit racing 4 in 1 tach for my car today and I'm trying to figure out what gauge of wire I need to run from the tach to the sending units. The wire from the tach is 18 gauge, what should I connect to the 18 gauge to the sending units?

Offhand, I would say - 18ga. Ford used 20ga on gauge circuits, but why tempt fate. I suggest stranded because it crimps (don't use vice grips) whereas sold wire doesn't. I also suggest the same colors as Summit used. Try Home Depot or Orchard Supply.

They didn't have any 18 so i got some 16 stranded. Will that work? I don't want to use it until i know for sure haha.

Yes, 16 gauge will be fine.  The lower the number the larger the wire.  Just don't go any smaller than the wire on the tach.

You can get the entire harness that is rated at 2 gauge  collectively.  So, 16 will be just fine.

I ended up finding a 40 ft roll of 18 in my automotive cabinet in the garage that was buried so i just used that. Everything seems to work just fine. Thanks for the help guys.
