I have noticed that when I start my car and the car is running it seems as though the starter whines for a lengthy time. I was not sure if it had always done it or not since I bought the car last November . Tonight I let my buddy who I bought the car from drive it and he asked me what I had replaced because the starter sounded different, he was referring to the whine. I did change the relay last winter could it be the reason?

The starter sounds like it engages just fine and the engine turns over normally, but after ignition the starter disengages but as I mentioned whines for several seconds??

Any ideas out there?

Two possibilities. The Bendix spring in the starter is getting weak, or the Solenoid is about to go south. Solenoids are cheap, so would start with that, and if that didn't cure it, I would take the starter into Autozone or some auto parts place and have the starter checked. If it's a weak Bendix, then just replace the starter with a rebuilt one.
