sanding rust down to metal
« on: December 26, 2011, 10:09:21 PM »
Hi, I'm a newbie when it comes to removing rust, so I would really appreciate anyone's help. The hood of my "new" 66' convertbile has rust all over it. When I began sanding it, I get to the shiney metal in some parts, while other areas remain a darker grey. When I look closely, I see the darker areas appear to have tiny pinholes with rust imbedded in them.  I am afraid to keep pushing on the sander and digging deeper.  Does anyone have suggestions on how to proceed? Thanks.

Are you planning to prep and paint the car yourself or have a pro do the work? The reason I ask; My 67' convertible's hood had lots of rust and pocks on the top and bottom side of the hood too and several dents. I was certain the hood would need replacing but I found a good body guy to paint the car and he made the hood look brand new ! Regardless if you plan to do the finish work yourself or hire it out you can apply a rust eliminator, I used Rust Doctor and it actually converts rust back into metal and coats the surface high quality primer to hold you over until the finish work can be done. www.Therustdoctor.com

Hope this helps

Thanks for the advice. I plan to have a pro complete the paint job. I want to get the rust off and some primer on it now, because I have a lot more work to do on the vehicle before painting. I have read about the rust eliminator products but wasn't sure if I should just spray this stuff right on top of the rust or first sand down some of the heavier spots.  It sounds like you just sprayed it on and that worked. You didn't do any sanding beforehand?

Yes, I did sand first to remove the loose material and to expose the metal. The solution I used comes in a jug so there was no spraying I brushed the solution over the rusted areas. It has the thickness about the same as light pancake batter and the same color off white. As soon as it came in contact with rust it turns black actually turns rust back into metal, you will know what I mean if you use the product. The areas turn slick, black and hard a nice surface that then can be skinned with body filler, primed and painted. My car's hood is the original 1967 hood that came on that car from the factory and was in horrible condition and now looks as good or better than it ever did. But I found a great body and paint guy to finish my car too.

Thanks. I will try this, and keep looking for a good body guy.

If you haven't found a painter, a word of warning-Most will not warranty paint over your body work or primer.  Find a painter and coordinate with them before doing much more and save a lot of headaches.

Some spray can primer is pretty crappy
