Resoring 1966 Coupe
« on: February 03, 2010, 12:14:03 AM »
Hiya,
I'm a newbie, hope I've got the correct posting area.

I have a 1966 289 Coupe I'm in the process of resoring, it's 97% complete but I am having some trouble finding two parts for it.  The first is the interior door handles and the second is the seat belts.  I've looked at California Mustang to find an equivilant but there is nothing, and the car is originally from a showroom in California (I'm the second owner in Vancouver Canada).
So I am trying to upload a picture of what I am lokoing for but can't seem to make it work. So I'll try this, below are some links to what I am looking for.

thanks
Kman66

The first two pictures are arm rests.  You buy them by getting the arm rest base, then the pad that goes on top.  The seat belts are also a very common item.  Give CJ Pony Parts a call, and they will fix you right up.  BTW, the color is called Palamino.

Welcome to the forum (Glen forgot). You have blue arm rest pads and Palamino seat belts in your pictures so what color interior do you have? A better choice for original type seat belts is Ssnake-Oyl at http://www.ssnake-oyl.com/ They do an excellent job on restoring belts but they are expensive. For most other parts for your Mustang try National Parts Depot  http://www.npdlink.com/ The nearest distribution center to you is Southern California.

I didn't notice the color of the armrest pads, but you can buy those in anycolor you want.  If that is the lap belt that came with the car, then you have a strange mixture of colors.  Exactly what color is the interior?

Hi all,
Thanks for the replies!
I guess my problem was I was searching for door handles, which I guess they are not.  But after it was mentioned they are armrests I found what I was looking for at California Mustang, they seem to be a good source of parts for me, anybody else had experience with them?  The color of my interior is turquoise carpet and "cream" seat coverings but I believe they call it Parchment, seems a bit more yellow than the Palamino (which is more like a tan color right?).

The seat belts are another story.  I tried looking at NPD, but can't find any?  I would like to get the Parchment color ones.  I think my interior was originally Palamino (the door code says "Beige") but I've had the interior re-done in Parchment.  Another wrinkle (perhaps) is the front seat is a bench seat and maybe the seat belts are different for a bench seat???

Just tried CJ Pony parts for the seat belt and all they have is black.

Any suggestions?

Another good source is Larry's Mustang Corona,CA call 800-854-3093 and order a free catalog. I have had good service from these guys as well. Freight up to Vancouver maybe more reasonable shipping from a west coast supplier. Best to collect several catalogs and compare prices to get the best deal...

Good luck on your ride!

Yeah, both parchment and palamino are close to the same color. The parchment is a tad lighter, but if your car has the parchment interior, then it should all be parchment.....not blue or green or any other color.  +1 on Larry's in California.  I have bought stuff from them with good satisfaction.

There are not too many parts supplies with original style seat belts so if you want original belts go with Ssnake-Oyl.
As to California Mustang or Larry's, NPD is cheaper, has a better selection and more inventory. I've restored six Mustangs using them as a main source in recent years every since Ford stopped stocking parts for cars over 10 years old.

For about $100 less per pair than Snake-Oyl is a company also in TX that makes perfect replacements too, even with Ford tags if you wish, and they are PYTHON Restorations http://www.pythonrestoration.com  I bought my seatbelts from them and they are beautiful.  ;D

I think that Python was set up by a former Ssake-Oyl worker a couple of years ago. I haven't seen any of their work so I can't comment. I have several sets of Ssnake-Oyl belts and they rate high.

You can get universal lap belts from Mustangs Unlimited for 15 bucks.  They list a tan color.   If you are not into originality, that would be the cheapest route.

Hi all,
Thanks for all the sugestions, I think what I am going to do with the seat belts is install these ones front and rear: http://www.cal-mustang.com/1964-67-MUSTANG-EMBLEM-SEAT-BELTS-Parchment-P24659C0.aspx

I beleive they are still period correct (I am resoring to original), does anyone beleive otherwise?  I am thinking they may be for the pony interior?

I am for all original, but that is just me.  You only buy a seat belt once in your lifetime.

HA, that's funny... you do only by seat belts once in your life I guess.  So are the ones I'm looking at correct for this car?  By that I mean, could you get them in 1966 as a stock item in the 66 Coupe non-pony 289 model?

Those are not original type Mustang seat belts. No, let me repeat, NO, Mustang parts seller, NPN, Larry's, Texas, Virginia, etc, sells an original 64 to 66 type seat belt. Your options are used from e-bay, Craig's List or restored from Ssnake-Oyl or Python.

I had great luck finding original seat belts on Ebay.  They are for sell all the time.  I was even lucky enough to find deluxe emberglo belts, the whole set in almost  condition and it only cost me $50.00!

There's a big difference in $50.00 e-bay seat belts and ones that qualify as "restored". My 66 Fastback has 79,000 original miles, was kept in a garage since it was bought new in Nov, 1965 and for the last 15 years been in mine. The seat belts were acceptable for use but I invested in getting them rebuilt by Ssnake-Oyl. That's the difference.

My lap belts are original and work just fine.  They don't need rebuilding.  That's a waste of money IMO.

I took a look on ebay, just out of curiousity, but there is nothing in new condition and I can't see a reason why I would spend $20K+ restoring this car and cheap out on something like the seat belts.
It looks like I might go with the restoration of my old ones.  Can anyone give me a ruff idea of the cost?  I'll check with ssnake-oyl as well as python restorations, but just curoius as to what others have paid.

Also, were there no rear seat belt in the 66 coupe?  I'm not sure if I lost my old ones when I took the car apart or if they were never there?

cheers

Hey Kman66, Here is a link that has price info
http://forums.vintage-mustang.com/concours-forum/595940-ssnake-oyl-seatbelt-restoration-costs.html

Concerning the Ebay thing, There are lots of vendors that sell NOS (new old parts) parts on there.  I have an automatic search going that sends me an email everyday when mustang NOS comes up in the description.  I've seen NOS original seatbelts on there many times.

Also, I've it's not that big of a deal to clean up an old pair unless they are junk and too far gone.

If you find a set that the webbing is not frayed, is not discolored and the chrome is in good condition, just clean up the chrome with 0000 steel wool, clean the plastic parts with a good cleaner, mask off the chrome and repaint the plastic.  My seatbelts look new and it didn't cost me anything but a little time.
