Rear suspension
« on: August 17, 2009, 08:42:05 PM »
Hi All,

I have had my '66 for seven years now, and am getting back on the fix up.  Seven years ago I installed a new front suspension (using what were advertised as stock GT equivalent springs, shocks, etc.).  Now I am getting back into fixing this thing up, and I am not sure what the equivalent for the back suspension would be.

I am also concerned that maybe the car has settled now, and if I get the stock GT rear leafs for the '66 model that the back maybe higher.  Is there a way to measure something on the front end that will show tell you what you should get to make sure the back is level?  Any suggestions on where I should get some quality parts?

Also, not to complicate things, but I am also putting tri-y headers and a new dual exhaust on it.  Does one need to be done prior to the other, or are they exclusive?

Thanks for all your help,

Micah

Hey,
I re-did my 67' last winter. The car's front end was still sitting at factory height after 42 years so needless to say I just installed new rear leafs, bushings and KYB gas adjust shocks. My car now sits nice and level and handles very nicely. My car was sagging in the rear and the new springs brought her up almost 2". The amazing thing is the shocks alone brought her up almost another 1.5". I live in Oregon and ordered the springs in Portland at Oregon Auto Spring and they were built to specs for my convertible. After only seven years I cannot imagine your car would even begin to sag upfront unless the spring quality was not there in the first place? Personally, I would install the suspension first before taking on the exhaust system, that way there are no surprises.

Hope this helps?

Jeff

Thanks. I think I got the front kit from mustangs plus. I will just check with them to see what the rear end equivalent would be. It was funny when I put the GT front on the car was still level with the original stock rear (guessing it was sagging all around before I did the front). I think I will take your advice on the order of the projects.

Thanks for your help!

I can't add much to what Jeff has already said, but I put the standard eye rear leaf springs along with the KYB shocks on my 65 and it brought it up to factory specs.  I haven't fooled with the front end because there is nothing wrong with it.  That rear leaf spring front bolt can be a bugger to get out though.  I had to cut it off with a sawzall.
