rear springs 66 mustang
« on: January 05, 2012, 04:32:14 PM »
I need to replace leaf springs on my 66 mustang. There are 15" rims on the back and 14" on the front. What is the ride height on standard rims and any ideas which are the best replacement springs. Thanks

Springs are dependent on car weight and driving style.  The 200 pound rate springs on my 73 would not compress with a lighter car like yours and would ride like heck.

Look at 4 1/2 leaf springs

Details on your car would help.  Standard eye location for a stock appearance and go from there.

http://www.flex-form.com/products.asp

The above link if for fiberglass monoleaf leaf springs.  If I were buying springs again, this is what I would get.  They are progressive and ride well, and they are incredibly light.  a set saves you nearly 80 pounds off the rear of the car.  This is sprung weight were it really has more effect upon handling and ride.  I would probably talk to them about the best spring rate for your intended application, as they do this daily and will be able to steer you in the right direction.

Thank you for the link, I have sent them an email, could be just the job . The height measurement I was looking for was from the ground to say top of wing, I was wondering where an original car sat. I believe the front eye is in the standard location and there is a hanger on the back eye.

Another option which I used on my 67' was to go my local spring co. and have them build or sell you out of inventory a new set of replacement springs for your car. My convertible was really sagging in the back and combined with a set of KYB gas adjust shocks the car sat at factory height once again and handles like new. The particular co I used already had a set in stock that was for my exact year and model, had used them in the past on a 69' Camaro so there was history for me at Oregon Auto spring.

Just my thoughts, I prefer to go original

We do not have a spring co local. Got a reply from Flex-Form, but I think I would like steel springs

Not sure where you are located, but there certainly must be a spring company in your region or state?

Hi Jeff1967, I am in Ireland and I am looking into any local company, but no luck so far. I would still like to know what height the body of the mustang sits

Hello Jake,

I would take the measurements, but I am in Nevada this week at a trade show and cannot until next week. My car is a 67' the year Ford redesigned the Mustang but it should be close to a 66'. Perhaps someone out there has a 66' who is willing? If not give me until next week.

Hi Jeff ,thanks. If someone with a 66 could check the height that would be great and if someone who has used the monoleaf springs could let me know how they compare with steel springs. The measurements of my car are 27"3/8 rear and 25" front, measured from ground to wheel arch.
