You will be charged 50.00 for a half hour labor just to drain the fluid from the rear end, another 50.00 to put fluid back in. another 50.00 to pull the axles. You will be tying up the lift the entire time getting charged an hourly rate as long as it sits on the lift. That lift is thier bread winner, If they have it on a bench they can get to it a little at a time throughout the day. As well as someone mentioned its a lot easier and faster when your not looking up at it the entire time, banging your head on the floor in the dark, while its still hot. This way you can already have it drained cover off if its not a 9" if it is have the pumpkin loose and ready to open, and the axles ready to come out, That is your cheapest route.

Absolutely Flying duchman.  A rear end on a workbench that has been properly drained  and the cap popped is a hellava lot easier to work on and cheaper that one on the car.

I would call a shop and see what they say. I was quoted $700 to regear and reclutch My 71 Mach I. I have a hard time believing I could save enough to justify the R&R of the thing. When I get a chance I'll call them and see what they say.

Do you have new clutches for the Trac-loc?  I heard that they a not reproduced and difficult to get original replacements.

When I called six state they didnt sound like parts woould be a problem. We are talking about the most recycled rear end out there so I really dont think parts will be a problem..

Those clutches should be replaced while you are in there I would think.

They are 40 years old and all.. You might be surprised how much better they can work when it freshened up..

$700.00 isn't too bad of a price, but for about that amount you can buy a rebuilt center section ready to go.  Then if your current center section is in good shape, you can sell it, trade it or hang on to it in case you have a need for it in the future.  I'm looking to do the same thing right now and I have rebuilt a ford 8" rear end (which is basically the same as a 9" only smaller) and it is time consuming, but with a good guide and not being in a hurry it is easily done right.  Parts will run 400+ dollars with a good grade ring and pinion gear, lube all bearings, shims, seals and track lok clutches.

If you look at center sections on ebay, be careful, many advertise posi but are in fact fitted with a full spool which you will find very unpleasant on the street.

Well i actually found a good deal on a setup. Its a 9+" rear end housing with 2x 31 spline axles, whatever gear ratio i want already installed with the differential, and all the brake parts ready to go. I can choose between drum and disc brakes. Its build for the cars so they bolt right up to the leaf springs etc. For around the same price so i think i might go that route and have it all brand new and that way i dont have to worry about it again after this for a long time.

31 spline axles are stronger and if you can get disc brakes at the same time that would be the way to go.  Just make sure he's building it with a true track lok differential and not a full spool.  Keep in mind the disc brakes are going to require a proportioning valve and preferably a different master cylinder.

Yeah, its traction lock and the brakes wont be a problem because ill be doing a full disc brake conversion, ive already found a kit to match so justing waiting to get enough money at this point
