Power Steering Question

I have a '67 289 that I'm currently working on.  After having numerous problems with the power steering I'm considering taking out the pump and hoses for the time being and replacing the whole system.  I was wondering if this would cause any problems (besides not having power steering) with anything or would damage any of the other components.

dont forget that you will need a smaller belt. no it will not cause any problems it might give you a couple more HP and less drag on the motor.

Yeah I kinda figured about the few extra HP and all but what concerned me was moreso any damage that may occur to the steering system itself.  Why would I need a shorter belt?  The belt running the power steering pump is a seperate belt in itself.  One runs the power steering, one the alternator, and one used to run the AC (took that off after I first got the car).

I drive a 67 mustang that I took the p/s off of and there are no problems. You need a little more muscle to drive and it ussually takes two hands on sharp turns but other than that you should be good.

Same here... I had a '67 when I was a kid, and it had pwr steering that didn't work.  I had the classic little steering wheel, but was young, dumb and didn't care.  Problem with parking and low speed turns.  I'm much older now, rebuilding another '67, and I have finished replacing the inoperative power steering with a manual one.  I want more hp.  Biggest issue was (is) finding correct Pitman Arm for the manual setup.  One thing I will do with this car is have a nice, larger steering wheel than the childhood mini wheel.
