performance questions

I am new to this site but i'm hoping for some good advice.  I bought a 65 mustang coupe six years ago I am now 21 and have been thinking of what to do with my engine and drive train set up. Currently it has a 289 with a four speed manual trany and an 8in rear end.  I know that I want to put a 9in rear end under it but im not sure on the gears.  But, what I am mainly interested in is what to do with my engine.  I want a power plant but I don't know what parts to use.  I think that i want to make a 347 stroker if i can find a 302 block.  But, if anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated.

it would be cheaper to get a crate motor. Unless you wanna biuld it your self and I can understand that . nothing like showing off what you did. Also welcome to the sitr sorry it took a long time replying . I have been geting ready for college after being out of school for 12 years

hey bro you might want to check out that rear end you might already have a nine inch and I would leave the manual trans under it and that 289 will rap like a 327 chevy that means you can get more rpms out of her but a nice 347 would be easy to build. YOu can get a 302 anywhere they are a dime a dozen just like chevy products.

 I think it would be sweet if you could and I don't know if you can but get the 302 crank with a nive rv cam and put it in your 289 and I think you would be very pleased with what you find. Race what is up man you don't talk to me anymore,lol.STANG OUT

I am planning on leaving the trany alone, I just didnt know what to do with the engine i know how to put it together just not what to use.I am pretty sure that the rear end is an 8in with not much for gears.

If you have an 8", why not keep it and replace the pumpkin with an 8" drop-in posi?  Lot less hassle, posi will give you traction to both tires, and an 8" is as good as a 9" for all but the most demanding purposes.  I know a guy that gets about a foot of air with his 8" and that is all most of us would ever need....  As for gearing, start at 3.55 for best power.  Anything lower is doggy, and anything much higher is great streetlight to streetlight, but sucky in the gas consumption and rpm areas.  Just my opinions....

A lot of guys just build the top of their engine without considering th bottom end.  If you want to do it right, then take it completely apart and take the block to a machine shop to see if you can bore it to 0.030 over, then get new flat top forged pistons and a new crank, etc.  Get AFR (Air Flow Research) 185 heads, Then  go with Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and their 650 cfm carb.  Put in a medium cam.  Not the lopey kind.  Research that. Get some long tube ceramic coated headers with collectors, an X pipe and a pair of 40 series Flowmaster mufflers.  Now, that's a streetable hotrod.
