opinions wanted/needed
« on: October 27, 2009, 11:27:15 PM »
OK so im ready to start assembling me new engine for my mustang. Its a 400 and i was wondering should i put a set of 4v clevo heads on it (they are rebuilt) or get some aluminum ones for it. Or just have the original cast iron ones rebuilt and stick them back on? im doing a roller cam wit roller rockers and the block is bored .60 over so would the cast iron heads be like setting me back? Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated.

One more related question ;D
I was always planning on putting headers on the engine but i have run into a problem once i found out it was a 400 block. To much knowledge 400s were always in trucks, never a Mustang. Would there even be a set of headers available for a 72 mustang with a 400 engine in it.

Opinion

The Ford 4v Iron head is just fine and can go on with a good rebuild, no porting and should produce plenty of power.  Closed chamber would be best, open chambers would be good though they are actually more prone to detonation than the closed chamber heads.

Aluminum heads are physically lighter and may combine 2V an 4v features as well as custom chamber dimensions.  They will save you a nearly a hundred pounds off of the front end.

As to headers, it is a guess, but I would think that the 351C 4V headers would work, but might need a bit of tweaking to fit perfectly.  The different deck height will have them sitting an inch or so higher in all likelyhood.

Buy the painted headers rather than the ceramic coated, that way if you have to bend one a tad or flatten a tube a little, you won't have the finish destroyed.  Besides it will save you 250-300 off the price.

Why did you decide on the 400M engine?  I have never heard that they were a desirable engine.

Thanks for all the info. The reason i got the 400 is a long and painful story. I was trying to find a complete 351c on craigslist so that i could rebuild it and put some performance parts in it for my car. So i found one at a swap meet got it for 100 bucks. Was a 72 block complete from pan to carb. Brought it home and tore it down to the block. Took it the machine shop to have it cleaned mag'd and measured. I went in 2 days later to check on it and i said "yeah im the guy with the 351c, just wanted to see how things were going." Then he says "that's not a Clevo, that's an M." So....long story some what short, i got a "Clevo" which was actually an M  >:(

Haha, wouldn't that figure? ;D
Luckily i just found a guy on Craigslist who has been working with Fords (Mustangs in particular) for 32 years. He has 27 Mustangs and thousands of mustang parts. I am going to his house tomorrow to look at his 72 4 BBL 351c for sale. Also gonna see if he might have some more parts for my car while im there :D
