no gas going to the carburetor
« on: November 15, 2009, 11:31:28 AM »
for some reason I can't get gas to go the filter and to the carburetor. Any suggestion I am thinking maybe is the fuel pump. Any suggestions?

Take the line loose from the out port of your fuel pump and if you get no gas coming from the pump, then the pump is either fried, or the filter in your tank is stopped up with rust.  My first suggestion is to take the sending unit out of the tank after you have drained the tank, and see what kind of condition that filter (sock) is at the tube on the sending unit.  If it is clean, then your pump has gone south.  They are cheap and easy to replace.  By taking out the sending unit on the bottom of the tank, you will be able to get a visual idea of just how much rust is in the tank.  If there is a bunch, then replace the tank.  Since you posted in the classic section, I will assume that you have a classic Mustang.
On edit:  If you are getting a good stream of gas from the pump, then you have a stopped up fuel line between the pump and the filter.

you might want to check the line for leaks/rust out, especially the short rubber connector between the line and the tank the rubber often cracks there. If it is a classic with the original line that might be the problem. if the line has a hole the pump will not be able to create a vacumn. While your at it checking the tank and fixing any issues with the tank/sender is also the right thing to do, like Soring stated. A quick check to see if it is the pump, is to put a vacumn guage on the inlet and crank the enjine while looking at the guage, no vac, most likely bad pump. Quick check for line, disconnect feed at pump put line into can etc, jack up back of vehicle 8-12" , if line/tank filter is OK it will gravity feed
