New Electroinic Ignition for 66 GT
(1/1)
LilRedGT:
Rebuilding a 66 A code 289 GT. Talking to a guy at a Mustang show he recommended I upgrade the standard ignition to an electronic ignition. Said there was a model out there that maintains the look of the original but has latest tech. Can anyone help ?
Share pro's and con's. Do I need to consider chnaging anything else in my rebuild to get the a great running car.
66GTKFB:
Get a Pertronix I ignition and a Pertronix coil. I put one in my 66 "A" code hardtop quasi-daily driver and it solved a myriad of problems (starting, cutouts on turns, poor mileage). The system eliminates the points and replaces them with a magnetic pickup. The only negative is an extra wire (red - for power) from the distributor to the coil. If you use a short piece of tubing it is not apparent. Pertronix states that in some applications the voltage thru the resistance wire may be to low but mine works fine.
See http://www.npdlink.com/ p/n 12A112-2 $78.75, coil 12029-3A $32.75.
Don't bother with the Pertronix II or the billet types unless you race or have money to throw away.

I also replacecd my points with a Pertronix I, and that is about the best thig I have done on my '65 289. The starter barely turns over before the engine is running. It felt like I picked up a few ponies as well. I think I paid like $65 bucks at the time. They are probably around $100 today. MSD is a whole lot more expensive. I didn't add the flamethrower coil, and I don't think I need it. My old coil works just fine. I wrapped the wiring from the coil to the distributor with black shrink wrap, and you would have to have a good eye to tell it isn't the original wiring for points.
If you want to keep the engine original looking, just do a regular overhaul. You could do some internal things like flat top pistons, and extra duty rods with 4 bolt mains, but that isn't necessary if you aren't going to race it.
ol dirty doug:
used the same petronix on my 68 coupe and was awesome!
