need help please
« on: March 11, 2010, 09:29:22 PM »
I have a motor that runs good. I was told that it is a shelby motor but I dont know how to confirm this. I can tell you that it is a 289hp dual quad with fomoco and the firing order stamped on the intake with holley carbs. I pulled the starter and the block casting # are oc5ae-6015e I have searched and cant figure out it if  this is a rare engine or what it might be worth?? more so what the engine origanaly came out of. thanks and any help would be great..

Shelby motor ... Hmm where do I begin  What Carrol Shelby did was to take a K code mustang 289 and turn it into a hot machine. By adding on a few updates  like intake manifold, Tri-y  headers, Holley carb etc

Ford used the 289 C5AE-6015-E block for a few years from 1965-1968 and is in alot of fords

The K codes  did use the C5AE-6015-E but so did  many other fords so the block itself isn't different from a c code car or a A code car.  The K code block had bigger main caps with bigger bolts. The block that you have has that casting number but the K codes had different K code heads, dual point distributor, K code exhaust manifold, balancer, rods, rod caps, and pistons, and the crankshaft also had an extra counterweight on the front end of it, lots of little internal things intended to keep it from breaking.

So first look at your Vehicle manufacture number if the 5th figure is a k you could have a k code car.  Then all K code had a solid lifter cam. They have a very distinctive sound.

Guess what I'm trying to say you can't tell if it is a Shelby (k code) motor just from the block number. The only way to tell for sure is by taking your motor apart and look at the main bearing (pulling the oil pan off) and the heads (pulling the valve  cover off) or knowing the sound of the cam.

Hope this helps

A "Shelby" GT-350 engine is basically the same as any 289HP Mustang engine and all 64-67 Mustangs HP engines had the VIN stamped into the block on the right hand side near the front above the oil pan (first picture). These are the only Mustang engines of that era that had a VIN stamp so it is or it ain't. The fifth character will be a "K".
Next to the casting number located at the rear of the block on the same side is the block casting date in the form 5K23 (5=1965, K23=Oct 23) . On a "boss" near the distributor (second picture, from my "K") is the actual engine assembly date in the same format with a letter at the end that may be the inspector's stamp code or the assembler's stamp code. C5AE-6015-E castings are common. I have two other cars with that casting plus two spare engines (no you can't) with C5AE castings.

Man, you guys are good.  My old original 289 doesn't even measure up to your K codes, but she still starts and runs daily.   If it has a dual quad carb, then  it is suspect to be a K code motor, but if it is a Shelby that can't be verified.
