long axle length
« on: December 14, 2008, 01:14:20 PM »
I am putting together my 9 inch for my 65 mustang.  The housing is 52 1/4 inches.  I need to know what the long axle length should be.  Mine is 27 3/4 from the back of the bearing to the end of the spline.  I think it should be 27 1/4.  Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not sure.  I hunted for about 30 minutes on the internet and nobody seems to have published that info.  One thing to keep in mind though, is that a 31 spline axle can be shortened and resplined, but a 28 spline axle  is tapered and cannot be shortened.   Just look at the axle housing near the end, and if it is tapered, you can't shorten that axle.

The first question is why? From the Ford Car Parts manual (SEC 40 Pg27) the lengths for a 1964 thru 1966 9 inch ring gear axles are shown as 26 5/64 inch and 30 1/8 inch long. No point of references are made, as in 'from where to where'. They are 28 spline.

Don't you think they are talking about "from end to end"  Jim?  To the flange?  ;D
In addition, the total length of the axle housing is supposed to be 57 1/4" ....not 52 1/4".  59 1/2 on 1967 and up through 1970. That is measured from flange to flange.

Axle length, not housing. Put your bifocals on and read the original post again.
Jim
Ok, I did. It appears to be a custom housing, so my original question remains - why?

I just got new glasses a few weeks ago. Paid too much for them, but they work pretty well. I see the word "Housing" in the OP's post.  The axle and the housing are two different birds.
