Leaking 4100 Carb
« on: December 01, 2008, 02:55:12 PM »
I have a carb that was rebuilt by pony carbs like 10 years ago. Unfortuneatly the restoration stalled and I don't drive the car much. Last time I tried to start there was no fuel to the carb. So I thought fuel pump...replaced still no start, discovered a fuel leak out of the accelerator pump on the front.

Is this just a bad gasket? Or maybe blockage from bad fuel? What could be causeing it ans what can I do to fix.

BTW I contact Pony carbs already and they said send it in, I can't afford that right now and would like to fix myself...

After any carb sits, the gaskets and diaphrams dry out and crack. You might find a replacement accelerator pump gasket at an auto parts store. Take in the old one for a match. You may have a lot of 'varnish' built up in the carb in jets and internal gas passageway so a rebuild may be required anyway. If you take off the top of the carb (remove the 8 screws and the air cleaner center post) you can see if the carb has gas in it (from the fuel pump), how the floats look and what gunk build-up has occurred. A new fuel filter would be a good idea too.

It needs a whole new kit installed.  Send it to me and I will overhaul it for the cost of the kit and mailing.  Or, overhaul it yourself, and I will talk you through it.

i had sort of the same problem with my 65 autolite 4100 a couple of years ago. Same leak... replacing the accelerator pump gasket did it. But i have to agree. For a carb sitting that long, just re-do the whole thing. These cars were ment to be driven, and when you don't things start to go bad,

It has not been sitting for ten years, I drive it at least once a month just can't go far, since it has no lights bumbers or anything else....

Thanks I will try the gasket first...and go from there...

You will be wasting your time.  The whole kit needs replacing.  And, I say that because soon down the road something else is going to go bad, and you will have to rip into that carb again.  Just do it right the first time and save yourself some future headaches.
