Jacking up the front of my 65 Mustang
« on: March 31, 2011, 02:57:50 PM »
Where is the best place to place the floor jack to jack up the front of the car? I do not want to put it under the oil pan. That is a good way to dent the pan. Thanks

I usually put it under the front crossmember where the engine mounts.

Hope this helps

Never use the oil pan. You can do major damage to the engine if you change the spacing between the oil pump and bottom of the pan. They need a certain amount of clearance and if you reduce it you'll reduce the amount of oil getting pumped thru the engine. . .  8)

No, as I said - I will not put the jack under the oil pan just for that reason. I will use the engine mount. Just wanted the see where other guys are putting the jack for this. Thanks

if you are unsure how to jack up a car, it may be best to take it to a shop.

We all have to start somewhere at least he had enough common sense to know where not to jack up the car.

yeah as long as he asks about everything he's unsure about, it might be ok.

Thanks, I really do have some sense. I have never looked under the car. I have only had it for a few months. Got it the first of Feb. I have jacked up many cars in my life and yes, I put the floor jack under the frame but I new the Mustang had not much of a frame. I am 67 and no dummy but that was a silly question now that I think of it. I use to drain my own oil befor the Goverment got into it. I have my intake off and had it sand blasted and just got done painting it. Took most of the parts off of the engine and replacing most with new and new screws and bolts. Rebuilt the carb and will be painting the firewall etc. soon and replacing the engine compartment wires with new. So I am not a dummy. But I do have questions now and then even if they do not make since. John

+1 John. I got exicted after reading your question and put fingers in motion before putting brain in gear. I know guys that knew better but still took a chance while in a hurry. Some got away with it while one or two didn't. . .

Sounds like the car is coming along pretty well. . . . . .  8)

No problem. I enjoy doing what I can on classics and have had them most of my life. I have pulled engines, installed engines but they have always be Chevys. Had a lot of 55-57 Chevys. On that question, I should have looked under the front of the car first. Had a senior moment. But I do not have to take the car to a shop to get it jacked up.  ::)
