The vinyl dye will stick to vinyl better than oil based paint.  Here is a pic of mine on my 65 coupe that was painted about 10 years ago. 

what of wrinkle finish in a can? also read that in the old days they used tung oil while it dried.

I think you'll be fine using a chemical stripper.
Here's a little tip for "restoring" the original grain, if it's gone: Use a high-build slow drying primer/surfacer, When it is dry enough to finger print, without getting primer on your finger, press a piece of vinyl or leather onto the primed area. The grain will transfer to the primer. It won't be exact, but it works.

i may use the wrinkle paint on a piece of scrap metal and the vinyl on the other side for a comparison. thanks :)
