I want to start this
« on: July 05, 2009, 06:27:46 PM »
I am trying to get the insite on how which rear end gear to go with I have two to choose from. 3:55 or 3:73. It isn't going to be used for racing but I cannot stand that 2:75 that is in it

Russ, Ford thought it through back in the early 2000 models and decided the 3:55 was the right rear gear for their 4.6 .  I agree, but that depends on your transmission, and you don't have a 4.6 engine.

I had a 3:50 in my earlier 4-speed and I always thought I wanted to be looking for "5th gear" at 50-55 mph.  It went short distances and around town great, but I really didn't want to take it for a long drive.
If you are wanting something to cruise with go with 3:55.  3:73 will do the same but keep you at the pump a little more often.

Going from a 2.75 to any of the 2 will be a huge feel it in the seat of your pants difference. I would go with the 3.73 myself, the 3.55 is not a far stretch from the 3.73 anyway. Might as well go all the way on this one !!!!!!!

Yes, but Russ knows he is going to have to beef up that engine and add the AOD in order to make that 3:55 or 3:73 be viable on the freeway.  With his transmission (FMX) he will be pulling over 3K RPM on the freeway at 70 MPH.  That's OK if you have deep pockets for a lot of 93 octane gas.

I would opt for the 3:55 for general use.  That is what Ford put in my 03 Mach  1, so the engineers designed the 5 speed for that rear gear.

You will notice some difference in the seat of your pants off the line.  Cruising, will not be much different.

Well atleast we started some good thoughts out on this. I still think the 355 would be the right choice.
