Topic: I have an original FOMOCO Carb from a 289 Mustang. Any thoughts on value?

First post here guys.  Always been a mustang fan.  I came into a carb in good shape from a 289 mustang its a genuine FOMOCO carb.  Any thoughs on what one of these might bring?

Welcome to the forum.
Depends on what type carb you got, 2 barrel, 4 barrel, and the ID stamped on the left front mounting ear.

It's a 2 barrell.  not sure about the model number because I'm not near it right now?  How widely do they vary?

I think basic 2 barrel carbs are common. A 4 barrel from a 289 Hi-Po would be a different story. If the 2 barrel was off of a 289 Hi-Po 3 duce set-up you could also raise the bar. . . . .

It's value is as a rebuildable core. I've given 2 barrel carbs away as they are common.

I rebuild 2 barrel 2100 motorcraft carbs all the time, and I get the cores off Ebay for anywhere from 10 bux to 20 bux.  I sell them after I rebuild them for around 70 bux.  So, you don't have a gold mine.

It's not a Mustang carburetor. It may have been an off the shelf rebuilt replacement used way back when. The "AF" portion of the C4AF part number indicates it was originally designed for use in a full size Ford and although the dash number (the "DE") does not appear in any of my reference materials, the others in that time frame that do, were used on 292CID engines. My Ford Car Parts manual starts with 1965 and lists no carry over C4AF carburetors.

There is no such thing as a "Mustang" carburetor, even though Mustangs were outfitted with Motorcrafts.  Motorcraft carbs were used on many Ford applications.  A FOMOCO carb could also have been used on many Ford applications.  Bottom line is that it ain't worth much.

The 221/260 and followed by the 289 replaced the 292 and 312's late 50's early 60's I don't remember the dates. Some early 60's trucks may have had some of the last ones to get rid of inventory. . . .

Somehow I don't think a 1964 full size Ford carb would be used on a 1963 car, and a 221CID engine was used only in 63 Fairlanes and Meteors. The listings I have for 260 engines refers to C4OF (Fairlane) types and no C4AF prefix was carried over into 1965 applications. Trucks used a C4TF prefix for their applications (low end torque), so this C4AF is a one year only application.
Ford engineering designed a carb for a body style use first application, and then used it on other body styles. The first application for a full size ford designed carb used in a factory Mustang was in the 1967 GT-500 and it was designed for the 1963 427CID dual quad setup. However, from 1964 1/2 thru 1973, many first application carbs were given the Mustang "Z" designation, so you may say there were Mustang carburetors.

The "Z" application is designated for many Mustang parts, but I haven't seen any "Z" stamped on any of the 2100's I've worked on.  I guess I need to get my glasses cleaned.

The first year for the Mustang (1964 1/2) had all the carbs designed for the Mustang except the HP and the early 289CID 4 barrel. The early 289CID 4 barrel was borrowed from the Comet. Those "Mustang" carbs had a "Z" in the part number on the tag and the 2100 and 4100 had a truncated p/n on the left front mounting ear.  That number was shortened more in 65 and on. My "K" carburetor has 6 Z F on the mounting ear.

OK.  Most of the 2100's I work on don't even have a metal tag attached to the passenger side front screw.  I just guestimate the kit number based on experience.   So far, all my 2100 overhauls have worked.  I have a bid on an almost new 2100 on Ebay right now.  I think I'll keep this one  for future uses for 'Ol Yeller if I win the bid in case the current carb can't take another overhaul.  Can't pass up a good deal.

Here are the numbers for 64 thru 68, Mustang only. Other car lines that used 2100's are Falcon, Fairlane, Comet, full size Ford, full size Mercury, Edsel, Tourina, Cougar, Montego and trucks. Lincoln and T-birds did not use 2100 carbs. Other venturi dia not shown: 0.98, 1.01, 1.21, 1.23, 1.33.

That's good to know Jim.  So, only the 64 1/2, 65 and 68 had "Z" designated carbs.

There's one more Mustang two barrel I omitted, the 1968 390CID "X" code, C8AF-AZ, or -BA, or -BB, or C8OF-AE, or -AF, or C8WF-A. I can't find a reference to the bore size. This is a rare Mustang.
Starting in 1960, the part number was stamped into the  edge of the left front mounting ear. There are many more that are not used on Mustangs, many more that are replacement types (a "P" in the third slot, C6PF-F) and many more that have no ID at all.
