Topic: Graunching/Grating Noises Finding Reverse GT 350 1965

I have recently purchased a 1965 GT 350.

The car has a new gearbox in it. I'm having trouble putting it in reverse it makes a terrible metallic grating noise when attempting to put it in to gear. Not all the time, but most!

Does anyone have any ideas about cause, fix? This is my first Mustang so it could be user error!

Either you are not pushing your clutch all the way down, or you need to replace the symcronizers in your transmission.

you may need to adjust the clutch, you should have a little free play at the top of the pedal before it engages, a half inch or so works for me.

Oh and Soaring-reverse is not synchronized in a toploader or most older manual transmissions-only in the later model T-5's did ford start adding a synchro to reverse gear.

Make sure you are at a complete stop-without a synchro, moving and shifting into gear will normally result in some grinding.

You can check your shifter for proper adjustment.

Put the car in neutral and let the clutch out and then depress the clutch again and shift into reverse (double clutching)

Just a hunch here, but how high is your idle set?

Welcome to the forum. You need to determine what "new" transmission the car has. There are three possibilities. Crawl under the car and see if a magnet will stick to the housing. If it does, you do not have an original Shelby transmission as they had an aluminum housing T-10. If there is a plate on the left hand side where the shift arms go thru it's a T-10, both iron and aluminum types. A Ford top loader's shift arms go thru the housing itself.  The reason I mention this is that T-10 transmission design had the reverse gears added to a three speed transmission and that design had flaws.

Jim's right.......we are assuming it is a manual 4 speed tranny.   If it is a top loader, then you need to be completely stopped in order to go to reverse.  If it's a T-5 then your clutch plate needs to be adjusted.  There's no telling what you may have in that 45 year old Mustang.  Let us know once you have identified the tranny, otherwise we are just shooting in the dark.

same thing the 5.0 guys do(well they normally use 5th)
