fuel pump questions
« on: February 04, 2010, 12:54:42 PM »
Does the stock fuel pump on a '71 302 push enough petrol to feed an engine that has an upgraded cam, as well as a 4bbl carb? I did a complete tune-up(plugs, wires, coil), it's timed correctly according to my mechanic, and has a MSD ignition system. I still notice it lugging off the line and was wondering if it might be a fuel pressure issue. Considering the K.I.S.S. principle of shade tree mechanics, I thought I'd start at the easiest (and least expensive) places first. Any ideas ?

Once you start adding power enhancing parts, then the engine requires more fuel to run properly.  Have you thought about a high pressure pump, an electric mounted on the fuel tank?

Hi

How about a retune for the carb. You changed the Cam, Now it acts differently.
Your idle system might be set wrong. You might be getting a fuel transfer lag.

I run a stock fuel pump in my 351W up to 6000+ rpm.(circle track)
Have you checked the fuel pressure from the pump?

lugging off the line may be a symptom of too rich a carburetor setting or of a carburetor that is too large for your application.  What size 4 bbl is on the car?

Fuel starvation is normally noticed in the upper rpm range.  I run a stock fuel pump with around 400 horsepower at the flywheel and it is more than adequate for a 700 CFM carb on a 351 cid cleveland
