Fuel gauge not working...
« on: August 07, 2005, 11:14:47 PM »
'66 Mustang (V6, Auto):  The fuel gauge is not working. It was fixed at one point, but hasn't worked since the body restoration.  I'd like to fix it, but don't know how.  Please advise.  Thanks, Tom.

well first make sure everything is connected on the sending unit on top of the tank. or a pinched wire. if it was working before it should be something easy

I grounded the sending unit wire and the gauge went to full.  When the SUW was not grounded, the gauge remained at empty.  After I reconnected the SUW to the tank, the gauge went from Empty to 1/4 full.  I know the tank is about 3/4 full... so that reading is not accurate.  So the problem is the sending unit?

the float in yer sending unit has either become disconnected and slid along the rod that its attached to and its giving a false reading or somehow yer guage is screwed, try filling up yer tank and keep a can in the trunk  with some gas in it, run that tank until you quit and note the placement of the guage when you fill it up as well as when you quit. if it doesnt move at all from when you fill it up to when u runout than its in the guage, if it is eratic, than its in yer sending unit, if so when you run out take out the sending unit and check the placement of the float, if that is ok then im out of ideas...........hey maybe i could try this on my 68 the guage doesnt werk on that either hahahha

if you disconnected and grounded  the wire at the sender and the gauge went to full, then yes replace the sending unit.

Your gauge is shot.  It's not a big deal to replace it.  Let me know if you need help.  If the sending unit is sending any message at all to the gauge, then  the sending unit is OK.
