I would simply use a name brand 10W-40--I favor the major Oil Company Brands

You need to do some research on Synthetic oils.  I have been using Mobil 1 for quite sometime and am very pleased with it.  Synthetic oil is slicker so gets into places that dino oil has a difficult time at start up when the oil is still cold, and it lubricates much better than dino.  And, as Stephen said, get either a Motorcraft of Wix filter.  I have those studies in the FAQ section at the top of the Classic section if you choose to educate yourself.  If you are concerned about the cost of synthetic oil just remember that you drive it twice as far as dino before changing again.  It works out to about the same cost.

Royal Purple, and Mobil one are close to being the same synthetic oils if you research and read the studies.  Amsoil is also up there among the top synthetics.  The difference between Royal Purple, Amsoil and Mobil 1 is that you can get Mobil 1 at Walmart at about half the price of those.  Your choice.

Anyone try or use Zmax? ... Other than Carroll Shelby! ;D
It looks interesting with it absorbing into the metal.  I still have Valvoline in from the the repaint, new engine parts/rebuild but plan on going to Mobil 1 sometime soon.  I do like how when I first change the oil with Mobil 1, I can barely hear my engine running it runs so smooth.
I don't like Castrol on older engines as it seems to burn more than other brands - just my opinion.

I may switch my 67' over to Mobil 1 . what is you preference in viscosity ? Also, anyone experience any new gasket leaks after switching from regular oil? Just heard rumors in the past about the synthetic oils creating new leaks.....any truth?

My old 289 has about 130K miles on it as far as I can tell.  A few years back, my son hit a deer and the animal rolled up under the car and came out the back.  Well, his hooves and horns took out the oil pan and the exhaust system.  So, I bought a new oil pan and muffler system.  So, my gasket for the oil pan is basically new.  Anyway, I worried about changing to synthetic because I had also heard horror stories about leaking from the old gaskets.  Well, I didn't have zilch for leaking.  I recommend you go ahead and change over.  Even if you have a little leaking, it will stop after the gasket gets soaked I understand.  Mine never leaked a drop though.  I use 10W40, but I live in hot Texas.  I think most folks use 10W30.  These old engines are not as tight as the new ones, so the 5W20 is not a good choice for them.  The 5W20 is what I use in my 03 Mach.

And get a Wix or a Motorcraft filter.  There is no need to pay for a high dollar oil filter like the K&N and others.

I live in Missouri and went with 5w30 because we get temps from the winter of -5 F to summer of 105 F.  If I drove it more, I'd change to 10w40 for summer driving.

Yeah 5W30 in sub-zero weather is a wise decision.  5W30 in 90 degree weather is dumb.   ;D
