Engine keeps running
« on: June 24, 2009, 03:49:20 PM »
I have a 1973 mustang with a 351 cleveland engine. Every part on car is new. Today when I went to shut off engine it kept running. Well I put a bigger battery in it, because the other one got drained to fast. Bought a new coil and balaster. Its was switched to electronic ignition. I have replaced about 6 months ago the ignition switch under the dash. Today it got unseasonbly warm here like 93. Was wondering if it was weather related. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for your imput jemoore24

That's called dieseling, and it occurs whenever your timing is not right.  It also doesn't occur all the time as you have probably noticed, so you can blame that on the engine heat.  Either you correct the timing of the engine, or have a shop do it, but that is the major cause of dieseling.

I know that it is not deisiling because the engine just keeps running like the selenoid is sticking. When you turn the key off it wont shut off the engine. I have to go unplug the coil wire. Just put a new selenoid on two weeks ago. Wonder if it was bad. Never had problems before. jemoore24

Oh, you mean it just keeps running as if you never turned off the key......
Yeah, the solenoid is bad.  Even though it is new, it needs to go back where you got it and trade it for another one.

The very same thing happened to another member a few weeks ago.  Solenoids are cheap and a lot of the time you get a bad one even though they are new.  If, after replacing the solenoid and the problem persists, then we need to look at the ignition switch and perhaps the wiring.  But, I am confident it is a bad solenoid.

That other guy would be me, and yes, it was the solenoid brand new out of the box and bad. My friendly NAPA man gave me an exchange and it cured the problem.

So gents, I have a simliar problem. Just replaced my Ignition switch, because I thought that might have been the problem..... Car will sometimes turnover, and other times it will not even try to turn... Is this a solenoid problem? The Wires coming off the switch look good, no obvious tears or exposure. Yall think it could be the Solenoid? Or something else.... I'm at a loss, I've tried to fix this problem now for the last two weeks, and I have purchased a new Solenoid as well. She'll start up if I close the gap without a problem..... at a loss....

Try the solenoid first, they are cheap. Could be a starter problem as well.

Yeah, if you shorted over the solenoid, and she started, then just replace the solenoid.

How are you Oregon guys enjoying that 100 degree plus weather we Texans have been having for a month now?  We finally got a shower tonight.  About a 1/2 inch that at least watered the lawn and brought the temp down about 10 degrees.

I built a 4 car garage and roofed that sucker in the July heat of Texas back a few years ago, so I can relate.

Glen,

Oregon weather must be in the news if you are aware of our currently hot conditions. A lot of people don't know that most of Oregon is high desert and we have the hot dry weather most summer months. In Bend here we actually get over 300 days of sun annually, as compared to Portland and the Willemette valley, (Eugene) where they get 300+ days of clouds and weeks of rain \.
Texans are tough and can handle the heat !!

Yeah, I watch the weather channel each morning, and it said anywhere from Seattle down passed Eugene was suffering in the 100 degree category.  Yeah, I know about Eastern Washington and Eastern Oregon.  I have kin who live in Seattle, and we used to go camping in Bamff, Canada and had to drive through Eastern Washington during the summer heat.  And, his car was not air conditioned.   :o

Alright gents, I'm on a break from my car because a Storm front is in Florida, and have been working on her when the weather has permitted.... A couple problems I'm running into, not related, but still annoying as hell....

First: Starting problem. I replaced the Solenoid again, and even went as far as to clean the grounding terminal that connects to the block, right behind the alternator. She still won't even attempt to turn over... Is this possibly a Starter issue? Sometimes it will go, and others it will not... I'm at a COMPLETE loss. I've been trying to work this problem, from Solenoid, to switch, and can't think of anything....

Second: There is a leak somewhere in my back seat area that is getting the back driverside floor soaking wet when it rains hard... I took the side panel off, along with the entire backseat to try and find out where the culprit is, if you have any ideas where this might be occuring, or had similar problems, PLEASE let me know, its hot, humid and slightly moldy here in Florida, and it sucks....

Seriously just worn out right now, and any help will do. Thank you guys, and your constant help with someone who just doesn't know any better.

Steven

If you have eliminated the starter relay, and switch, sounds like you have a dead short either to your starter or the starter is shot. As for you leak, it may be your seal is shot around the rear window and water is running down the glass and coming in behind the trim at the bottom.

For some reason, I couldn't get onto the site for a few hours.  Anyway, take your starter out and take it to Autozone and have them check it.  When you put it or the new one in, clean the end of the cable really well so positive contact is made.
On the leaking, Jeff is right.  The rubber seal at the top of the door and over the rear window may be old and rotted, and the seal along the front of the window may be in the same shape.  All that would take to fix it would be to get new rubber and some yeller sticky assed glue designed for weather trim.    ;D
