According to the Ford Car Parts, Section 40, all 1972 V8 rear axle housings were 9 inch. There should be a metal tag attached to one of the retainer stud from the housing to the carrier that tells the axle type, build date, plant and gear ratio.
(Note: That tag is the first item discarded in a rebuild.)

There is a quick way to visually see if you have a 9" or not.  Look at the back of it, and if it has a "hump" it is a 9", but if the pumpkin is round, it is an 8".  This is a 9".....see the hump?

There's a saying from the 60's - "Speed costs money, how fast can you afford to go?"
