Converting from drum to disc brakes
« on: December 07, 2009, 08:01:49 PM »
Hi All,
I have a 66 mustang (sorry, it's a 200L6 not a V8) and I'm restoring it with my son. A friend told me that it might be worth converting the brakes from drum to disc and I'm trying to find out what that conversion would be like, i.e. estimate on man hours and $'s.  Would I convert just the front, or do front and back? All feedback would be appreciated.

There are a myriad of companies who advertise the disc brake swap with all the materials you need to accomplish it.  With your light car, you will only need to replace the front shoes with the discs.  Do a google search and you will find many companies.  However, many of them charge too much, so shop smartly.  Here is an aticle that may lead you in the right direction.  The author is a prick, but he has good advice.   ;D

A conversion to disc brakes using Ford parts on a 64 thru 66 6 cylinder Mustang requires changing spindles, tie rods, center link, idler arm, Pitman arm and wheels to a V8 type before the disc system can be installed. There are kits that are set up for four lug cars but what I've read about them has been not good. That may be because of the poor condition of the cars at the start.

Here is one from SSBC: http://www.mustangsplus.com/xcart/product.php?productid=1292&cat=2190&page=1
I installed their V-8 non power front conversion kit on my v-8 '66 coupe about 10 years ago and love it. It took me about a day to install (due to old siezed together brake lines). Combined with really good BFG G-Force Sport 225/50 ZR-16 tires the car stops on a dime and leave 9cents change.

The kit I linked is for a 6-banger not a V8. So it should work quite well for him.

OK, if SSBC has a 6 banger conversion kit, then it might be a good idea to look into it further.  Give then a shout.
