Center Console
« on: September 14, 2009, 07:17:21 PM »
Hey Guys,
I have a 66 mustang, manual trans.  I dont have a center console, and I am not a fan of the non-stock ones.  However looking for one is quite confusing.

From what I can tell - the center console comes in multiple parts?  so if I were to buy an old one, I could put new inserts into it , if it looks aged ?  Do I have that correct ?

Also is there somewhere that sells an entire kit-everything you need for a 66 manual ?

Thanks

Soaring

There are no aftermarket original consoles for the 65-66 as far as I know.  If you can find them, they will be expensive.   Ebay would be your best bet.  The console comes in two varieties.  If you have an un-airconditioned car, you will look for the long variety with the glove box at the top, but if you have an air-conditioned car, then the shortie is what you will be looking for. However, the long one can be cut to make into a shortie.  Here is my shortie.  Now the shifter area has a shift plate.  You need to get one for a manual transmission. The rubber flexible goes below the console.  As you can see, mine is already torn.  That is a commom problem.

This should be the full kit for you if you do not have A/C:

I was looking at one for my '66 as well, but for $500 there are a lot of other things I have in front of that one.  I don't know what quality these are, but would like to hear from someone if they have purchased one before.

What color are you looking for?  I have a red one that came out of mine, but i am switching to black/silver interior.

My used one that I bought was black originally.  I simply prepped the plastic and sprayed it with vinyl paint, and it has lasted me for many years now.  Don't worry about the color.  I paid less than a hundred dollars for mine.

That is good to hear on the paint.  I was thinking about doing that, but had visions of it peeling off after a few months of normal usage.  I may as well give it a try, and replace it if it doesn't work.  Do you remember what brand of paint you used?  I guess with a good cleaning, and a mild scuff it should adhear pretty well.

No, I don't remember the name of the vinyl dye,but Isuppose they all use the same ingredients.  Just be sure you prep the plasic with alcohol and maybe even Clorox to get off any residue such as oils and such.  Make sure the console is completely dry before spraying any color and let it dry in the sun for a couple days.
