Cash for clunkers
« on: August 03, 2009, 09:38:47 PM »
I know this is a tad off topic, but it really doesn't affect most Mustang owners because they can't trade their Mustangs in for a new one anyway.  My concern, is how is this going to affect an ignorant old farmer who has a 1965 Shelby GT350  sitting out behind his barn that is rusting away, and he gets the hairbrained idea to trade that classic in for a new Ford Ranger scaled down pickup?  He comes out a winner, but does the classic Mustang community?  That Shelby will be crushed with this program.  Why not just grow some balls and advertise it around the nation for 4,500 dollars and save a classic?  This is the part of the cash for clunkers program that I shudder to think what is going to happen to many of these old Mustangs.

I shudder at the thought of how much further into debt that dumb program brings us.

that was the issue that SEMA fought for in the original bill and most of the protection was added to help save collector cars, they have to be running for one thing to turn them in and there are some other issues but it still could happen. original parts is the thing that will disappear with the crushing and motor destruction

I heard that they have to be no older than 1984 or 1989 cars.  Can't remember which date is correct.

After further research, you have it right.  No older than 1984.  Also, the gas mileage rating of the new car is restricted too.  In order to get the 3,500 voucher, there must be a 4 MPG improvement in the new car, and to get the 4,500 rebate, the new car must be a 10 mgp improvement.  So, classic owners.  We are out of the woods, and that none of our precious classics will get crushed because of this program.
