C4 Transmission pan
« on: May 27, 2009, 11:52:09 AM »
I have been fighting a leaking pan on my tranny, so I have made a cork gasket and made sure the pan is as flush as possible. I am planning to install the custom gasket without sealer but need to know the torque specs to tighten the bolts? Does anyone know and have additional advise before I start?

Thanks,

JJ

Your firist mistake is to use cork for the gasket.  Use Neoprene composition.  Your second mistake is to believe the directions and not use sealant.  Use a thin layer of black RTV  on the pan side and a thin layer on the gasket side.  Let it get tacky before adding the gasket.  Make sure the holes are lined up really well by inserting a few bolts in the holes of the pan while the pan is still off the car.
Make sure you use Tpye F fluid and nothing else.   Torqe the pan bolts to 12 ft. lbs.    Start with the middle bolts and work toward the ends.  Start with just snug, then repeat with 6 lbs., then finish with 12 lbs.  If your idea was to save money by making your own cork gasket, you will be sorry because that pan will leak like a sieve.  Do it right the first time.

My idea was not to save money at all, this is a classic Mustang I am working on! I am trying cork because the plan you recommended does not work.

Thanks,

JJ

OK, well, good luck.....If my plan doesn't work you have a warped pan.
